Krong! said the alien. This is a really great book. My 6 year old loves it, and has since he was 4. It has a lot of fun details that the child can look for each time.

Garry Parson's fertile imagination was put to the test with BILLY'S BUCKET, his first book with Candlewick Press. It's a fantastical birthday story that cautions readers never to underestimate the power of an empty bucket-or a child's imagination! With his illustrations, the artist "tried to create a book as inspiring for children as the books I remember reading when I was young. And in this Garry Parson's fertile imagination was put to the test with BILLY'S BUCKET, his first book with Candlewick Press.

This book is fun and interesting for a three year-old, but still maintains its appeal for older kids. A stranger lands in the backyard of a gradeschool-aged boy and attempts to communicate with him. The boy, Jake, and his dog, Ace, consult his parents several times about this individual who doesn't speak English. At his parents' suggestions he tries Spanish, English, Japanese, etc. to no avail. It turns out this alien from another planet is his uncle, and the surprise at the end of the book is that Jake and his family are aliens, as well. The colors and exhuberance of the boy, paired with the funny nonsense language of the alien, captures the attention of the younger child. But throughout the book each page contains little clues to the true identity of Jake's family (his parents' alien body parts are always cleverly hidden). It is fun for an older kid to spot those clues, as well as to use the translator at the end of the book to learn what the alien uncle had been saying to Jake throughout the book.

My seven year-old recently took this book to her first grade classroom for a literacy share day, in which she read it aloud. The rest of the class was on the edge of their seats, not a peep to be heard in a class of 23 1st-graders.

My kids (both girls, 3 and 7) love this book and I always buy it as a gift for young children. I highly recommend it.
