Much of the Yorkshire dialect has its roots in Old English and Old Norse, and is called Broad Yorkshire or Tyke

Much of the Yorkshire dialect has its roots in Old English and Old Norse, and is called Broad Yorkshire or Tyke. Rather confusingly, someone born and bred in Yorkshire is also called a tyke. Examples of the Yorkshire dialect can be found in literary works such as ‘Wuthering Heights’ by Emily Bronte and Charles Dickens’ novel ‘Nicholas Nickleby’. The reader will notice that in Broad Yorkshire, ‘ye’, ‘thee’ and ‘thou’ are used instead of ‘you’ and the word ‘the’ is shortened to t’. Many people not from God’s Own County will consider the Yorkshire dialect as, shall we say, a little lugubrious

Yorkshire dialect looks at some key aspects of the Yorkshire accent as well as some dialect words and phrases which are still in. .Yorkshire is a beautiful part of Britain to visit, but will you understand the dialect when you get there? Source.

The dialect writings of John Hartley (1839–1915) not only capture the everyday speech of Victorian Yorkshire but also document many aspects of its social history. This anthology brings together ten of his poems with selections from his sardonically humorous essays on such diverse subjects as hope, sport, fools, foreign travel and cheating a landlord. A glossary of dialect words is provided. Read full description.
