Pedro Calderón de la Barca was born in Madrid, Spain on January 17, 1600. Continental Drama The Five Foot Shelf of Classics Series. Pedro Caldern De La Barca, Pierre Corneille. He was educated at the Jesuit College in Madrid. He was ordained in 1651, and became a priest at San Salvador at Madrid. He was appointed honorary chaplain to Philip IV in 1663, and continued as chaplain to his successor.

His literary activity was interrupted for ten years, 1625–1635, by military service in Italy and the Low Countries, and again for a year or more in Catalonia.
