As an editor for a military base magazine, I find this textbook exactly what a journalist needs to transition into magazine style feature writing. The book adds fresh angles to the art of writing while never straying too far from the basics. I have already written better stories and improved my interviewing techniques since reading through a few chapters. I have assigned my Marines to read a few chapters, and it has helped them as well.

This was a required text for a course I took. The professor was useless, but this book was amazing. It's the only reason our class learned anything that semester. I kept it and continue to reference it regularly.

I am a staff writer for an online publication and recently gave this book a go. I have to say that this is an excellent (as in well above average) resource for aspiring or semi-professional journalists. I often struggle with generating ideas that will lead to lots of web traffic, and this book offers great advice in that department (angles, narrowing topics, researching, where to find ideas, etc.). I appreciate how it is organized logically with a table of contents, and with chapters that build upon one another. It is written deftly--the author speaks to you, moreso than many titles here on amazon on the same subject.

Perhaps the aspect of this book I don't appreciate are the edgy sentences, like "Successful feature writers have an insatiable appetite for reading. If you don't, you should question whether journalism is right for you," which, for me, come off as unnecessary and pedantic. Good writers don't talk down to their readers, in my opinion. Still, the author is clearly an expert in his field and offers superior advice in this book. In fact, I've taken workshops for hundreds of dollars that didn't offer as useful information as this book has for me. As a writer in it for the longterm, I suspect I'll be referring back to this for quite a while.

This book is a must read for anybody interested in writing feature articles. In particular, the newest edition incorporates useful information about the ever-evolving technology of journalism. Feature and Magazine Writing: Action, Angle and Anecdotes will teach you how to write a feature article from soup to nuts: research, structure, style, publication, and nuance. I particularly like the section on how to develop ledes and common pitfalls associated with lede writing. This book distinguishes itself among many academic texts in that the advice it provides is pragmatic and will help others better understand how to land and sell feature articles. Furthermore, the writing is crisp, readable and engaging. Definitely worth the buy!
