I applaud the existence of this book and the availability of information for many. I was disappointed. I purchased the book because of the chapter on Ukraine. It didn't deliver for me. First, as I was reading the history and basic information, I couldn't picture where things were as the landscape changed. A map showing how some of the changes occurred would have been helpful. Second, the author stated that the major part of the chapter on Ukraine would be on the west, the part that had been in Polish control. Many of my ancestors were from parts that had been under Soviet control, so I felt the book did not meet my purpose for buying it. Third, I have ancestors and siblings of ancestors from a number of villages near Kiev. The author only covered two. She mentioned Jews being expelled from Kiev - but where did they go? Did they go to nearby villages or make longer treks. I'm not sure why the decision was made to focus on the west (and don't know what the boundary was,) but that decision resulted in the book not helping me find what I am interested in. Since this is intended to be a travel guide, I may find it more valuable in the future if I want to travel to other parts of Eastern Europe.

I wish I had found this book earlier. In the last few years we have been to several Eastern European countries doing our own Jewish Heritage tours. The amount of information in this book condenses what took me hours to find for previous trips plus more. As we read the sections devoted to those countries, we were able to relive our previous experiences and learn even more about particular communities and synagogues. We are embarking on another journey and thanks to this fabulous book, our entire itinerary with a wealth of information is before us. This is a very special book for anyone interested in the subject matter whether they plan to travel or are just interested in Jewish history.

I'm travelling in Rumania and this book is my constant companion. Not only is it well written and informative but Gruber leads you to fascinating spots off the beaten track. Very worthwhile read and kudos to the author. Never mind that this book is a few years old, I'm finding it a great resource.

This book is amazing . It has many details about many different places. Very informative book. Just a little disappointed that the author didnt go into more depth in certain places. Otherwise weell done.

The book was enjoyable to look through. I used the book primarily to learn about Prague and Budapest. Having now been to these place, I found that the detail was shallow compared to what I could find searching specific sites. While I did not go to small villages, I found no other sources like this. It might be a required guide if you were searching in villages.

I am planning a trip to Eastern Europe to visit the places my ancestors came from. This book is interesting to read. It provides both good history, describes why people left for the United States and is good for recommendations that you would want from a tourist guide.

this is an excellent travel guide and fits what I was looking for.
