In this groundbreaking study, Allan Hunter uncovers the vital interplay of literature and psychology as he takes a bold new look at the way archetypes – whether found in The Odyssey or Harry Potter – can profoundly transform both individual lives and our spiritually starved society.

A combination of therapy and expertise in literature, this book explains the six archetypes derived from 4,000 years of literature and how they may guide unhappy people seeking meaning in their lives. Holding up the great books as the best way to understand these timeless story elements, the discussion devotes a chapter to each of the six archetypes: the innocent, the orphan, the pilgrim, the warrior-lover, the monarch pair, and the magician. Story structures are shown to be particularly suited to therapy with adolescents, many of whom have never stepped away from television and the shopping mall long enough to understand their unmet spiritual needs.

After I read this book I had a deeper understanding cycles that I had been a witness to for my entire life. It was something that I watched and intuitively felt, but did not know how to explain. It's helped me with understanding people better to meet them where they're at. It's helped me with understanding myself as I teeter-tot between Orphan, Pilgrim and Warrior-Lover. It's helped me with my playwrighting and my story righting to discover the stories I want to tell most about people.

Thanks!

An essential book to own! As a writer, I found that Stories We Need To Know cracked open a new realm of self-knowledge. What rich writing material from which to draw! The major archetypes are alive within each us - The Innocent, Orphan, Pilgrim, Warrior, Monarch and Magician - and each reveals surprising insights as who we are, where we've been and where we're headed. Personally, I've become aware of "who's home today."

In a friendly and conversational style, Dr. Hunter deftly reveals the characters of our inner terrain, as well as their universal manifestations in great literature. A wise and compassionate guide, the author shines a lantern into one's inner world that can be both wondrous and wounded. Ultimately, one's personal reservoir of love and creativity is revealed. It's a rich well I can now better draw from to expand and deepen my own writing.

I enjoyed and learned a great deal reading Allan G Hunter's book, "Stories We Need to Know". Indeed, knowing more about archetypes can assist one on his or her journey in life. I began Hunter's book with almost no background in archetypes but soon built a working knowledge of the innocent, orphan, pilgrim, warrior-lover and monarch. Aside from that I learned how to recognize in literature each archetype and how to apply them to my own life. Apart from illuminating my inner self, there opened a new way to read literature. In fact, I didn't really understand Harry Potter until I read chapter 17 in the book. Fasinating! Thank-you Mr. Hunter.

This book is truly insightful and inspiring--a self-help book with a difference! Allan Hunter looks at 3,000 years of literature, from ancient myths to Jane Austen to Harry Potter, and shows us that not only are we all on a personal journey but that journey has definable stages, six, in fact. Don't worry if you haven't read The Odyssey since high school, the analysis is clear and concise. Even if you've never read it, you will discover the deeper meaning behind the literature and see how it applies in your own life. Most of the examples from literature are well-known and some, like Harry Potter, are part of the cultural moment. Here we see why. What is reflected in these stories is our own quest for self-awareness and mastery. The literature points to the ways we may all overcome the obstacles and limitations in our lives to be the people we truly want to be. The book gives us tools for the onward journey and lets us know we're in good company. And if you're a Harry Potter fan you're in for a real treat in the way the author looks at Harry's journey and sees how we might all be magicians! I highly recommend this book!

Stories We Need to Know: Reading Your Life Path in Literature

By Allan G. Hunter

ISBN 1-84409-123-6 (Findhorn Press, 2008)

By exploring 3,000 years of literature, Dr. Allan Hunter has brought to life six archetypes that traditionally have transmitted sacred meanings to generation after generation. Western society, by taking our stories literally, has disabled the transformative power of myth; this book reinstates that power by revisiting some of the classics using archetypes as your guide. Joseph Campbell would be in bliss if he read Dr. Hunter's work.

Allan Hunter's book is delightful to read and thought provoking. His insights invite meditation. I easily related to past travels through the innocent, orphan, pilgrim, and warrior stages of spiritual development that he depicts. And now, thanks to Mr. Hunter, I have a map that guides me beyond. At the same time, I was moved to consider how literature and other arts reflect human yearning and the trials and tribulations along the path of spiritual growth. Mr. Hunter's book is so accessible and compelling that I anticipate it will raise consciousness and elicit broader conversation about our spiritual imperatives. A must-read!

Most of us are living in an Orphan's world feeling stuck and discontented. Here, according to Dr. Hunter, psychic development is arrested and little action is taken to clarify our beliefs, defend them, and work toward the greater good of others and the cause. From Greek myths to modern struggles he has us consider common behaviors (blaming, following, self-pity) and common temptations (revenge, power, sex, public affirmation) in light of a natural tug toward using our unique talents. Few, it appears, have the courage to pursue that calling.

This is where the Western canon comes in. He reminds us that these are stories we need to know for many reasons. One is to provide models of mature, fulfilled, balanced, and nurturing leaders and their life paths. This, in turn, can inspire searching, letting go, and finding what we each need for an authentic life. An archetype template is provided, known to many of us but rarely applied to both literature and to daily life. This is fascinating. On one page you identify with knights of the round table while on the next you're clarifying personal values in the margins.

Hunter advocates learning from great literature to help us achieve peace on many levels. If a hint of that is gleaned from Stories We Need To Know - as it was for me - it's well worth the read.
