by John A. Keel 1971. For these reasons this book is written in a style which discusses known facts with the popular and unpopular beliefs they have inspired. I am not supporting any of these beliefs, I am merely discussing them. It may be that the great civilizations of Atlantis and Lemuria once actually flourished on this planet In this book I am only weighing the evidence pro and coo. It may be that little green men from Mars really are visiting housewives in Nebraska. I am only reporting the claims of the housewives, not trying to prove that Martians are really dropping in.

In the classic Our Haunted Planet, John A. Keel brings into chilling focus strange truths about the Earth and its . Keel brings into chilling focus strange truths about the Earth and its mysterious inhabitants. Our Haunted Planet is an entertaining survey of anomalous "Fortean" events such as UFOs, enigmatic stone monuments, Men in Black, missing ships and aircraft, phantom radio broadcasts, teleportation, missing time, black magick, tulpas, angels, demigods, tricksters, and much more.

His books grab you right from the start and are next to impossible to put down (or, as in my case, it gets next to impossible to close my Kindle for PC app, shut off my computer, and go to bed. Which makes for a strange trip down memory lane in a way. I can almost hear my mother yelling at me...as she used to do when I was a teenager: "It's after midnight! Put down that book and go to bed!". My mother's been gone for many years now but her memory lives on at times like this).

But back to Our Haunted Planet. This book is guaranteed to reawaken your sense of wonder even at my advanced age (be 65 in a couple of months)there's just so MUCH weird out there. He talks about those mysterious ruins on Ponape that Graham Hancock and others are delving into NOW Fingerprints of the Gods he talks about The Great Pyramid of Giza that Robert SchochVoyages of the Pyramid Builders and Robert Bauval Black Genesis: The Prehistoric Origins of Ancient Egypt and the late (and greatly missed) Colin Wilson From Atlantis To The Sphinx: Recovering the Lost Wisdom of the Ancient World have all been talking about more recently.

But, remember, John was there before ALL of them. OUR HAUNTED PLANET was first published way back in 1971!

But it's still relevant today. And, as I said earlier, John is one HECK of a writer! He takes you on a roller coaster ride from awe to terror and back again.

"Terror?" you say.

Oh, yeah. When he starts talking about the Men in Black (who may not be what ANYONE thinks they are) terror begins to seep in. Especially if you're reading this alone.
At night.
With only the screen of your PC, or Tablet, or Kindle for illumination.

"Wings over the World" (WOW), "The Trickster", "The Crew that Never Rest"...sheesh! My goose pimples start getting goose pimples!

And you realize you've read about this more recently in books by Nick Redfern Three Men Seeking Monsters: Six Weeks in Pursuit of Werewolves, Lake Monsters, Giant Cats, Ghostly Devil Dogs, and Ape-Men (still my favorite book by Nick) and Jonathan Downes The Owlman and Others and Ken Gerhard Encounters with Flying Humanoids: Mothman, Manbirds, Gargoyles & Other Winged Beasts and you start to think..."You know, there might be something TO this!"

And then you think. "Why in the hell am I READING this book
All alone
At night
With only the light from my PC for illumination???"

Now, having said all that: OUR HAUNTED PLANET has a problem. Like all books of this kind John gathers his material from everywhere. He, like Frank Edwards before him, had been a reporter and when he writes on these things he doesn't always check to make SURE that the stories are, in fact, true.
I noticed this when John started writing about the Red Haired Cannibalistic Giants of Lovelock Cave (near Pyramid Lake) in Nevada. This story has been told a lot. With many additions over the years. Stories about Paiute Legends about these red haired Cannibalistic Giants who were most fearsome and so evil that the Paiutes finally rolled a huge boulder against the cave opening while all the Si-Te-Cah (the Paiute name for these fearsome monsters) were inside. And where, one assumes, there was, eventually, only ONE left and, having run out of friends and relations to eat he (or she) finally starved to death.
The Paiutes have no such legends and none of the expeditions that found archaeological treasures in and around that cave found any evidence of ten foot tall giants. Yes, there were skeletons. Yes, red hair was found (dark hair turns red after burial...read up on all those red haired mummies from Egypt some time if you want to know why) and Si-Te-Cah means "Tule Eaters" (Vegetarians).

The reason people want giants, of course, is that they're mentioned in the Bible so there MUST be evidence SOMEWHERE.
I agree. But, so far, there have been no VERIFIED giants dug up anywhere.
(As it happens, the Paiutes DO have a legend about encountering a group of red-haired cannibals and wiping them out. But they are described as being rather small in stature---but as long as you don't get them wet or feed them after midnight...).
So, take the book with a grain of salt...not all the tales are true.
But they all make great reading...and what's wrong with that?

John A. Keel (1930-2009) is best known for his 1975 book THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES which was the basis of the 2002 movie of the same name. As a writer interested in the anomalous and supernatural, he traveled worldwide to research firsthand and wrote several books on paranormal phenomena. Similar to Jacques Vallee (see his excellent PASSPORT TO MAGONIA and his other books on UFOs), Keel came to the conclusion that phenomena such as fairy folk, UFO aliens, and other strange apparitions are likely produced by the same source: these 'elementals' may actually be 'a part of the human psyche' but he has coined the terms 'ultraterrestrial' or 'parahuman' to describe these beings who have influenced humans throughout history. They manifested as the 'gods' in ancient times and have always exercised an open or covert influence on human development and beliefs. Keel states: '...the earth has two histories: the history taught in our colleges and schools, and the real but ignored history of a very ancient people and of strange forces that have often supervised human events.' He points out that scientists usually ignore anomalous phenomena and says 'Although this sort of evidence is superabundant, it has never been systematically studied by trained scholars. Instead, this material has fallen into the hands of assorted cultists and students of fringe pseudosciences. It has been used to advance belief in everything from lost Atlantis to extraterrestrial visitants from some distant planet. To subscribe to any one of these multitudinous beliefs is to exclude all other possibilities. We should consider every possibility, avoid belief, and accept only the hard facts.'

OUR HAUNTED PLANET covers a wide range of anomalous phenomena from ancient times to the present. Some of the material overlaps with what Graham Hancock covers in his books, but Hancock comes across as a devout believer in contrast to the more objective approach taken by John Keel, Jacques Vallee, and others.

Among other things, Keel looks at the Great Pyramid, Stonehenge, the Nazca Lines, Tiahuanaco and other curious and apparently interrelated structures found throughout the world.

He examines theories about the origin of man and also looks at the ideas Dr. Immanuel Velikovsky proposed in his book WORLDS IN COLLISION.

He also discusses persistent patterns in UFO activity and the Men In Black (MIB) and other human 'mimics', and notes that 'The activities of these parahumans are largely confined to specific areas of this planet, where they appear and reappear century after century.' These are the so-called 'windows' or 'portals' into another reality, and tend to be places where geological magnetic faults exist. (Canadian neurologist Michael Persinger and others suggest that these electromagnetic properties may affect the brain and cause susceptible people to have paranormal experiences.)

Keel examines the negative influence these parahumans have had on humanity, such as the demonic possession of Hitler and his followers. He notes that they are often deceptive, racist, and incite strife and military conflicts. Jacques Vallee is in agreement and notes similar dangers these entities can pose in his books MASTERS OF DECEPTION, CONFRONTATIONS, DIMENSIONS and REVELATIONS.

Keel also briefly examines the influence these ultraterrestrials have had on various beliefs and notes 'The crux of the problem is to reach beyond the endless reports of varied manifestations and seek out the source: the physical, psychic, or psychological mechanism which has inspired these beliefs.' The ultimate source of all this phenomena still remains an open and controversial issue.

The publisher notes that this book was originally written in 1971 so some material may be dated and some comments may now be 'politically incorrect'. This book also does not contain footnote references or a bibliography, and the Kindle book does not have a linked Table of Contents so readers must make their own highlights. However, I've read all of John Keel's books related to the paranormal and hope that they will all be available as ebooks because his ideas are still insightful and relevant, as are the books written by Jacques Vallee and also the recently available ebook by Aneila Jaffe which I also review: Death Dreams and Ghosts

I have collected and read books on UFO's for over 30 years. I currently have over 200 titles and OUR HAUNTED PLANET is one of the top ten. I actually have several copies of this book and loan it to friends who become interested in the UFO enigma. Keel was one of the first researchers who attempted to bring many of the unexplained paranormal phenomena under one umbrella of explanation. (I can think of only Charles Forte and Morris K. Jessup who preceded him.) The book is well researched and well-written. The concise three-page theory on the origin of man that incorporates all three popular theories (Devine creation, seeding, and evolution) is alone worth the price of admission. I'm glad this book is being republished and highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the paranormal--UFO's in particular.

...that Keel is a popularizer of unsubstantiated data, stories lifted out of context, outright hoaxes, and misinformation. He is a master at promulgating pseudoscience with egregrious leaps of logic in his conclusions. Typically, he starts with an untrue premise (such as modern science can't figure out how the Egyptians built the Pyramids [when, of course, we know exactly how thy did it]), therefore they must have had help from space beings in UFO's. This is--tobe kind--absurd. I have not found a single datum in any of Keel's books which has not been explained by rational, unbiased investigation--his entire opus falls apart like a wet paper towel.

That being said, Keel is a very entertaining writer. As long as you understand that he's writing fiction, have fun reading him!
