He is the author of 15 books, including six consecutive New York Times nonfiction best-sellers. Among the best-sellers is Council of Dads, a book that describes how he responded to a diagnosis of a rare cancer by asking a group of men to be present in the lives of his young daughters. The book was the subject of a TED Talk and inspired NBC drama series Council of Dads. His latest work explores the power of life stories. Walking the Bible: A Journey on Land Through the Five Books of Moses (2001).

All three faiths claim Abraham as their own, and they all assert to be the correct modern day . Although Feiler interviews several authorities from different faiths, the book is in no way a scholarly approach to the belief systems of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

All three faiths claim Abraham as their own, and they all assert to be the correct modern day representative of the Abrahamic religious tradition. The book's first half addresses what the Bible and Koran say about Abraham, his call to monotheism, and his sons Isaac and Ishmael.

Feiler also invents this Abraham to some degree himself, which adds to the importance of his work. As for Abraham the book, it is an irresistible page-turner. It is not just a powerful piece of reporting, it is also a proposition, modestly put forth, that we unite behind our common father. Anyone interested in going on the difficult journey of challenging their notions about the current conflict will both enjoy it, and be changed by it. Joseph Weisberg is the author of the novel 10th Grade (Random House, 2001).

This is a wonderfully objective exploration of the story of Abraham — historically, geographically, philosophically, theologically and politically—from the perspective of all three Abrahamic religions. The story does not sugar coat the profound disagreements among religious traditions. There are parts of this book that are depressing and ugly. But the author expertly challenges the dogmatic views by pointing out how they are inventions of convenience, created at times when each of the religions was suffering from an existential crisis and called on Abraham to bolster their authenticity. Ultimately, the question is whether Abraham can become a unifying force, rather than a divisive one. Can the three religions accept that they each have their own story of Abraham but, just as we have accepted that we all worship the same God, can we also accept that we also believe in the same Abraham? It is a question worth pursuing for the sake of peace.

In our current times, when some are trying to foster hate at every turn, separation, and re-build the walls that divide “us”, “them”, and “those people”, this book reminds us that while different religions have journeyed along different roads we are all trying to reach the same place, learn the same lessons, have endured similar heartbreaks and aches, suffered together and apart, enjoyed the same traveling companions, and in the end, hopefully, will all arrive on the same mountaintop having attained the same enlightenment.

The book is broken up into a well written explanation of Abraham’s significance and importance to three of the worlds major religions and though different, explains how much they have in common in Abraham. Wonderful book for individual reading or your small adult study group.

This chronicle of Bruce Feiler’s search for the true story of Abraham is well-researched and engaging. The author’s discussions with Abrahamic scholars and clergy of the three faiths are enlightening. Each of the three religions claim Abraham as their patriarch. However, their relationships with Abraham are very different.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in the study of Abraham, and his relationship to each of these major religions.

"That Abraham is still being discussed so widely today may be the best evidence of all that the promise of his blessing has enduring relevance—and the indomitable power to inspire." A thoroughly engrossing look at a figure I thought I knew. My takeaway--God's blessing to Abraham was to ALL nations--says so in Genesis. So let's stop quibbling over who's got it right...

Purely academic, lacking the spirit that would give it life. It was totally uninspiring to me. I anticipated so much more.

We love the author having read his story of "Walking the Bible"; prior to our trip to Israel. This story is about the whole family tree of Abraham. Bruce Feiler has a host of Jewish, Christian, and Moslem friends, scholars, and teachers of the respective religions that shed light on their respective visions of the father of three of the worlds most important faiths. To me, God's love and joy, shined thru our father Abraham.

I enjoyed this book as a brief overview of Abraham, the first man who could hear God speaking to him. While we know little about this icon, it was interesting to note how people claim the broad promises of God and co-opt them for their own purposes. Sadly, most of the claims on this father of monotheism separates and causes conflict. What a great goal to use the same texts to unify and create peace.
