With one brief phone call, Judy Martin-Urban's life changed forever. Her deeply personal portrayal of the complexity of mourning her grandson while remaining hopeful of her daughter's survival and recovery will touch everyone who reads it. Judy openly acknowledges all of her conflicting emotions surrounding the car accident. Her honest discussion of the accident itself and the devastation that resulted underscores the fact that one choice can change an entire family forever. It took a great deal of courage and faith to share her family so publicly. The book is enhanced by Courtney's description of recovering from traumatic brain injury. It is an effective juxtaposition to read the account from the mother/grandmother and then to read how it feels from Courtney's point of view. This book should be in every traumatic brain injury recovery center and support group library.

Funny duck
It is difficult to find books that tell an honest story from the heart, especially those stories that contain such deep personal relationships that would be difficult for most people to share. Often it is easier to go anonomous. It is very readable and is well-put-together. Beyond this compelling story, Judy intersperses factual information about brain injuries that made it educational to read. Beyond that, it is a story of bravery, hope, and the strong nature of building family bonds. I recommend it for anyone, and it would be especially helpful to someone who is facing brain injuries personally or in a family member.

I couldn't put this gripping story down. My heart broke for Judy who not only lost a grandson, but who lost her daughter (as she knew her) due to a TBI. Compelling emotions issued from a mother's heart when she realized she could make no decisions for Courtney's recovery because her daughter's life rested in her husband's hands and his decisions for her medical care. Just as I was rejoicing that Courtney survived the accident, she had to face another unthinkable ordeal that would have crushed the average person. Thankfully, through it all, Courtney held on to become the remarkable, Godly woman she is today.

In this book authors Judy Martin-Urban and Courtney Martin Larson share a very personal and difficult story. The story could be seen as a tragedy, but instead it is a story of triumph, of how a family can pull together to not only survive but also to thrive. Thank you for sharing your story with us. I am sure many will find words of hope and healing within the covers of this book.

This is a good book, but it has too many references to God in it. Just about every page talks about God. If you are not a religious person, and think you can ignore all the religious references, by all means by the book and read it.

I imagine it took a great deal of courage to write of the tragic accident which permanently changed the author's daughter. We also hear from the author's daughter herself. Many do not care to read stories of tragedy, but they have something to teach each of us, and there is no exception here. We all have or will face challenges in life, whether they be unexpected tragedy or the expected loss of loved ones due to age or health. I found the story to be full of hope and encouragement in the midst of the heartache. I appreciated the story not being overly sentimental or dramatic. It was emotional, very emotional, but not in a dramatic way. The honest writing style had a greater impact and brought me to tears. The book taught me that forgiveness, redemption, hope and even little miracles come from tragedies. I appreciate that the author speaks of the challenges of family relationships and admire her for the courage it took to share such a personal story. It is clear she honors that hers is only one perspective. (Spoiler alert) One thing made me angry in the book, and that is that Courtney had to serve jail time for the wrongful death of her son. This seemed to me another example of a no tolerance law which made no sense under the circumstances. But Judy again demonstrates how good came even from something that felt very unjust, that being advocacy for inmates and their families.t
