Do you think House Council members just spend their days hanging out with servants?  . I’m not on the House Council, he said, voice low, his hands somehow dangerously perched on either of her shaking shoulders. I’m not Jay. She laughed.

Do you think House Council members just spend their days hanging out with servants? You’re ATerafin. The House War series centers on the most popular character in The Sun Sword series: a young woman named Jewel, who survives both the everyday perils of being an orphan in the slums of the city of Averalaan, and the demonic dangers of the Undercity, and who rises to become a key figure in House Terafin, the most important of the Ten Houses.

HOUSE NAME is the third novel in The House War, the series that began with The Hidden City and City of Night. Set in the same rich fantasy universe as Michelle West’sSacred Hunt duology and her six-book Sun Sword series, theHouse War novels recount the events leading to the momentous battle between the demonic minions of the Lord of the Hells and defenders of the Essalieyan Empire–a realm with a long and bloody history. The empire is ruled by the Twin Kings, themselves the sons of gods.

This is a fascinating series and I intend to continue reading it. I would have _liked_ a longer story about Jay and her den and the quick transition to the House was not what I wanted. However, it works fine and more time in the "hood" was just my preference. I guess the author didn't agree. These books give one a lot to think about.

The viewpoint moves around from character to character and much of the story is told in third person. A huge stretch of very important action takes place with no one we have been following closely present. The author does not choose to have it happen "offstage" and have the characters learn about it later. This is a wise choice as the events are so important.

There is one element of human life that is glaring in its omission. The almost complete absence of sex and/or romance is somewhat off-putting, at least to me. Several of the characters are of an age when their attention would be drawn in those directions and they would be even if they _were_ involved in important evens.

Scoreboard Bleeding
As most savvy Michelle West fans already know, "House Name" (2011), the third volume in her "House Wars" series, is an extended remix of West's 1996 novel "Hunter's Death". The two books relate the same major events, often in nearly identical words, and feature the same main characters, acting in nearly identical ways. As with the earlier "House Wars" books, however, "House Name" exists mainly to fill in the back story of Jewel Markess' little gang of orphans and misfits -- her "den". Therefore, the Hunter Lord and his huntbrother who were so central to "Hunter's Death" are off stage for most of the new book. Taking center stage are Jewel's den mates Finch and Teller who, as a result of discussions between Jewell and the Terafin, have become minor functionaries in the House. Finch and Teller's new positions allow them to see the sometimes-fascinating inner workings of House Terafin and the dramatic events of "Hunter's Death" from new perspectives while, at the same time, giving us better insights into the two characters. Some of the experiences they have and some of the new characters they meet, most notably the fatherly-but-crafty Jarven and the steely-but-kind-hearted Lucille, are real treats. This, however, is not enough to banish the unpleasant bouts of deja vu that readers will often experience while reading the retreaded material that makes up roughly two-thirds of "House Name".

One more series that is yet to be completed. More than a coming of age with a strong theme of loyalty between friends and a twist all things and people are more than first impressions. If you are a fan of Michelle West you know the subtle and not so subtle twists her book game as her characters begin to develop, this series will not let you down. If you are new to her writing you will enjoy the books more if read in order.

Not what i was hoping for which would have been a continuation forward from the Sun Sword saga where Jewel and her Den have already been well established for some years within House Terafin. This is the 3rd book to read following Hidden City and City of Night. I suggest you read those 3 first followed then by her earlier 'SUN SWORD' series, which picks Jewel and her Den up later on down the time-line.

The authors time-lines are frustratingly circular and leave much to be desired. I suspect from a creative standpoint this suits her as it allows her to re-use a lot of her material. From a readers standpoint however this is frustrating as i would rather move forward rather than having to re-trace the storyline and be introduced to characters i am already well familiar with from the earlier books. Kind of a cop-out and bit disrespectful of her readership.

Once you read Michelle West/Sagara's books you will want to read everything she has ever written. You will forgo housework, free time, tv, and your eyes will be glued to your kindle or the book. You will attempt to finish the book in one sitting. They are so addictive you will pre order books if you have never been inclined to do so before. You will join a yahoo group, twitter, facebook page and her webpage to see when the next book is due out. You will re-read every series until the next new book is out. It might ruin other books for you. She ranks up there with Heinlein and Anne Mccaffrey on my list. I have been enthralled by every book she has written so far.

Every time I see an ebook that is more expensive than a hard copy I become ill. This is ridiculous. Who is willing to pay more for a book that has no printing and shipping costs. If publishers want to spend a ton of money trying to get people not to get their books free they would be better off keeping the price of their books reasonable so people were willing to pay the price. I believe we should stand strong against this stupidity. If the publishers saved their money and just charged 2 bucks a book it wouldn't be worth most peoples time to try and get it for free.

I have read and reread all of the Hunter and Sword books. I really enjoyed the interweaving of plots and characters. I *really* want to know what happened *after* Jay steps in the fire! So far, the house books have only repeated what we already know, and while I enjoyed some of the new information, it really irritates me when an author changes the story. there are several scenes that she has rewritten, a whole new story for Angel that is totally inconsistent with his character in the original books, and she is not keeping to the same timeline. I'm not buying another of these until we get to the scene with Jay heading back to Terefin. These have been *very* disappointing.

This part of Jay's life is interesting in detail given concerning the nobility, rulers and mages that watch over the hundred holdings. Just as the first two, this book intertwines events and personalities to make a fascinating read that was hard to put down.
