The Emerald Cavern" is Mitchell Graham's sequel to the highly popular "Fifth Ring" that came out early last year. He pulls the reader right in and keeps them there. this is a polished character driven story with a fun plot. It would certainly help if you've read the first book in the series, but the author brings you up to speed so quickly, it's not a necessity. The world he has created is unique which makes the job a lot easier.

Graham Russell Mitchell OBE, CB (1905–1984), was an officer of MI5, the British Security Service, between 1939 and 1963, serving as its deputy director general between 1956 and 1963. In 1963 Roger Hollis, the MI5 director general, authorised the secret investigation of Mitchell following suspicions within the Secret Intelligence Service MI6 that he was a Soviet agent. It is now thought unlikely that Mitchell ever was a "mole"

A force for good. . . or evil?

Destiny and tragedy placed an awesome power in the hands of young Mathew Lewin. But is he its master -- or its pawn?

Needing shelter from his enemies, Mathew Lewin has come to a kingdom neighboring the one he saved by harnessing the might of the ring. The haven he has chosen, however, is anything but safe. Treachery and mysterious murder plague this land and its giant king, threatening a devastating civil war and giving rise to dangerous suspicions aimed at the boy who seeks sanctuary. But Mat fears the destructive resources at his fingertips -- he must learn their secrets or be destroyed by them -- and his quest has led him here. Now, to find the answers he covets, he must confront another who wields the power . . . and venture into an enchanted place of darkness where the truest and most terrible of evils dwells.

I honestly like it better than lord of the rings. That is the closest thing I can think of to compare it to. There are a lot of cool twists they have that set this completely apart from LOTR though.

Nobody knows much about the Ancients except that their minds were so powerful that they had the mental ability to change energy into matter. However with all their power they still ended up destroying themselves. All that is left of them are some ancient ruins and eight rose gold rings that give the wearer the ability to use their minds in ways similar to the ancients. Thanks to the rose gold ring that Matthew Lewin wore, he was able to stop Karas Duren and his minions, the Orlocks, from conquering his country.
Matthew is in Sennia where King Gaul and his counterpart in Elgaria try to keep the ring wearer out of jail for killing the man who murdered his father. While at the palace, statues come to life and try to kill Matthew. He reasons that an unknown enemy has a ring and his fears are confirmed when the ring the church was guarding turns up missing. When traitors to the crown plan to overthrow the king, the only hope to see justice prevail rests on Matthew's shoulders, a burden that would break a lesser man.
Matthew has matured from the time he first used the ring to stop a war (see THE FIFTH RING). His current trials and tribulations in THE EMERALD CAVERN make him even stronger and wiser than he was before he reached Sennia. There is plenty of action but author Mitchell Graham doesn't ignore his characters. They are well-developed and easily understood, heroes and villains alike. It is going to be hard to wait for the next book in this trilogy because there are questions the audience wants answered now. Mr. Graham is a superb storyteller with a colorful imagination.

Mitchell Graham debuted in 2001 with "The Fifth Ring", a book that was lambasted by many, but I liked it. I found that book to have a quaint and innocent charm that certain others are missing. While other authors write alleged fantasy novels that are just thinly veiled pornography, Graham's rural farmboys were so artless that they could only stare wide-eyed upon encountering a whorehouse in a provincial town. Well, "The Emerald Cavern" for the most part maintains the same sensibilities. Indeed the opening chapter has Mathew Lewin gawking in disbelief after learning that his girlfriend has posed nude for a local artist. So that's not the problem.

The problem, rather, is that this is a thuddingly boring book. It opens, after a gap of several months, with Mathew and his friends in Sennia, living under the guardianship of King Gawl. But trouble is brewing, in the form of evil priests, power-hungry sorceresses, and other menacing cliches. Anyone with a clue will certainly be able to figure out who the bad guys are and what they're up to as soon as these unfortunate klutzes arrive on stage. Regrettably, that category doesn't include the main characters, who walk into obvious traps time after time. Beyond that, "The Emerald Cavern" comes with all the trappings of formula fantasy. Minor characters get sliced and diced while major ones are invariably saved by off-the-wall plot devices. The bad guys screw up their plans through stupid mistakes. (Hint: never keep anyone alive just so you can torment them a little longer.) Add to that a load of grammar and punctuation errors and some sloppy writing, and you've got a recipe for tedium.

THE EMERALD CAVERN is an excellent follow up to THE FIFTH RING. It takes place some months after the events in the first book. Matthew is studying in the library at the Abbey of Barcora to try and learn more about his ancient ring, how it was created and why it almost destroyed the world in centuries past.
However, Matthews past is just about to catch up with him. Constable Jeram Quinn has come to take Matthew back to Elgaria to be tried for murder and to top it off two murders have taken place at the Abbey for which Matthew is the prime suspect. Matthew's enemies have also come for a day of reckoning with Princess Teanna and her cousin Eric Duran coming to Sennia with plans that will surprise everyone.
The characters in these novels are well written and pragmatic and they are continually growing throughout the books. This novel builds up to a great climax that marks a real turning point for all the characters. It makes you wish book 3 was available to read NOW. These are outstanding fantasy novels with a "magic" that is based on science but it just as scary for all involved as it has the proven capacity to destroy the world and has already done so once - and as Matthew has found out power without knowledge (and experience) is dangerous to its possessor. However, to get the most out of this novel it is recommended that you read THE FIFTH RING first.

Another very good fantasy read from Mitchell Graham.

This book is the second in a continuation of the "The Fifth Ring" series. I actually enjoyed this book more than the first; the pace was better (there was a slow, drawn out section in the middle of the first book that I found tedious to get through). As with most good fantasy there was magic, battles, friendship and betrayals; all of which made for page turning interest. While the first book was good, this one was even harder to put down.

The only negative, as with the first book, was the map; (and although I'm grateful for a map) it is poorly drawn and of limited use (a little more detail would have helped immensely).

A good story, well told; I look forward to book 3. 5 Stars.
