Mitchell Graham debuted in 2001 with "The Fifth Ring", a book that was lambasted by many, but I liked it. I found that book to have a quaint and innocent charm that certain others are missing. It takes place some months after the events in the first book. Matthew is studying in the library at the Abbey of Barcora to try and learn more about his ancient ring, how it was created and why it almost destroyed the world in centuries past.
The Emerald Cavern" is Mitchell Graham's sequel to the highly popular "Fifth Ring" that came out early last year. He pulls the reader right in and keeps them there. this is a polished character driven story with a fun plot. It would certainly help if you've read the first book in the series, but the author brings you up to speed so quickly, it's not a necessity. The world he has created is unique which makes the job a lot easier.
