I recomend all of Roberts Conan books for I haven't read any I didn't like. Treasure of Python is the sixth of John Maddox Roberts' eight volumes in Tor's Conan series that ran from the 1982 to 1997, numbering more than 40 books. With sword and sorcery to pirates and supernatural you can't go wrong.

Roaming the hills of Brythunia Conan comes face to face with a legend--Achilea, once Queen of a tribe of savage women, is a consummate warrior, as fierce as she is beautiful. Together they set out to uncover the riches of the long-lost Janagar, a mighty city that stood tall for five thousand years. It was abandoned by its people, who fled on one strange night, never to return. Treasure hunters beware! Deadly horrors are waiting for Conan and Achilea deep in the bowels of Janagar.

John Maddox Roberts is, in my opinion, the best of the Conan writers that aren't named "Robert E. Howard." Roberts' style is different than Conan creator R.E.H. (which is fine, since those who have tried to match Howard's style typically fail miserably), yet he captures all the elements that one expects to be in a Conan story... wizards, rogues, monsters, lost cities, and of course beautiful women.

And then there's the Cimmerian himself... hulking, brooding, sarcastic, superior swordsman, smarter than a Barbarian should be (or is expected to be), stronger than 5 normal men, and in this case lusting after AND respecting the blond Amazon, Achilea, a female version of all things that make Conan "Conan," though she's not as traveled and learned as the Cimmerian.

I won't get into the story itself (so as not to spoil anything, or leave a reader waiting for that part to happen where Conan does "X"). Again, it's an epic tale of what you'd expect of a Conan story. (Though I will mention Conan does NOT travel to the Amazon River in South America, which is what I was thinking for some reason when I picked this book up. Maybe it was the crocodile on the excellent Ken Kelly cover)

While no one will ever match Robert E. Howard's take on Conan the Cimmerian, Roberts does an excellent job of capturing the spirit of Conan and the Hyborian world, while updating the storytelling to a late-20th-century feel. And Conan and the Amazon is a perfect (and fun!) example of that.

(Also, check out Robert Jordan's Conan work. Aside from R.E.H., I still like John Maddox Roberts work best, but Jordan is a good 2nd).

Another excellent book by John Roberts. Maybe it's just me but I like Roberts Conan nearly as much as Howards. The story doesn't bog down and the charactors are interesting. It's a typical story of Conan meets woman meets adventure. I highly recomend it.

After a decade playing in Robert Howard's Hyborian Age, John Maddox Roberts brings his tales of Conan the Cimmerian to a close in a story significantly less interesting than the title suggests.

Here, Conan helps the queen of a tribe of misandrist Amazons battle some monstrous being. One would think the sparks of sexual tension would fly here, but as is an annoying regularity for Roberts, Conan spends much of the story as a prude, not making any move to bed Achilea till the end of the novel. This has always been my biggest gripe with Roberts' otherwise worthwhile portrayal of the Cimmerian. Conan is a lusty barbarian willing and eager to bed women. He's not some prim and proper semichaste gentleman who only rarely expresses an interest in enjoying a woman's charms.

On the other hand, Roberts gives us his usual trademarks of decent characterization and vivid backgrounds even if his pacing is not as strong here as in his earlier ventures into the Hyborian Age. The book has that going for it even if it is the low point in the author's several books about Conan.

One gets the sense that Roberts was tired of Conan by this point and put less energy into this story than into previous efforts. After this, he moved on to other literary projects. Within a couple of years, the Tor Conan line itself came to an end as the focus shifted to giving prominence back to Howard's original stories. Despite its flaws, the book is an all right pastiche though I find it frustrating as I would have liked to see Roberts put more energy and ebullience into his final Conan novel.

This Conan story is a little more generic than the other two John Maddox Roberts Conan pastiches I’ve read, but it still may be my favorite. As he so often does, Conan finds himself in the story by chance. In need of sword work in a disreputable town, he quickly meets a pack of Hyrkanians, four Amazons, and a dwarf. They are all hired to help an enigmatic pair of twins find a lost desert city.

“Conan’s heart thudded within his ribs. She was like a magnificent lioness: powerful, proud and deadly.”

The titular Amazon queen is the highlight. Roberts wrote very good feminine foils for Conan. Achilea has a scarred, weather-beaten face, the hands of a swordsman, and is almost as tall as Conan. But she is “not in the least masculine,” with “full and womanly” breasts and “sleekly rounded hips and buttocks.” Roberts may have had Cory Everson in mind when he wrote Achilea.

I won’t spoil the story, but things get pretty darn science fictional in the latter half of the book, in the best pulp tradition. And speaking of being pulpy, the fight with a crocodile that is depicted on the cover really does happen, and it is awesome.
