Michael Jan Friedman pens a terrific tale of heartache, heartbreak, regret and more as the character of Bones is finally given its due. Fans of Bones or fans just wanting one final official mission of the original crew should pick up this exciting and suspenseful tale. The history of these characters we love so much is THE entire reason we love them. Where they came from IS who they are. This book does great in fleshing out the "trainees" (hehe) past.

It is refreshing to read a Star Trek book that kicks the James T. Kirk character to the back burner and highlights someone else as the lead character, is the case of "Shadows on the Sun" is just such.

By the time Shadows came out, the Enterprise had already been pretty well-established as having been placed back in service before Star Trek: Generations finally rolled around and dictated an ending to those post-TUC stories. Michael Jan Friedman. Michael Jan Friedman. 21st-century Aztec gumshoe Maxtla Colhua, the hero of the alternate history police procedural Aztlan: The Last Sun, is back. On the planet Xhaldia, ordinary men and women are mutating into bizarrecreatures with extraordinary powers. This time he’s looking for the missing star of a brutal Aztec ball game–preferably before the guy’s fans make the streets of his city run red with blood.

As a young doctor with a beautiful family and a promising medical career, Dr. Leonard McCoy thought he had it all. But when the woman he loved betrayed him, McCoy fled to Starfleet, hoping to lose his pain in the depths of space. Now, more than forty years later, the Enterprise and her crew are ordered to transport a group of mediators to the planet Ssan, a world where assassination is a time-honored tradition, and McCoy is surprised to learn that his ex-wife, now remarried, is one of the mediators. And before he can come to terms with his conflicted feelings for his former love, she and Captain Kirk are trapped on Susan, and McCoy is caught in an explosive civil war, the only one with the power to save the woman who once nearly destroyed him.

Fading to black, the crew and bridge of the original Enterprise leaves fans for the final time at the conclusion of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, or so the audience was led to believe. Turns out Starfleet has just one more mission for the intrepid heroes, who inadvertently almost caused an intergalactic war but instead help bring peace to the galaxy.

A dangerous diplomatic mission to a planet whose culture is based on assassination. But for one crew member, the ties are more personal. Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy it turns out served as a cadet on the planet during the last assassin wars, where he wound up treating one of the assassins themselves. Yet, this is not a big deal compared to a one of the two-member Federation diplomatic corps team assigned to broker a treaty - his ex-wife.

Shadows on the Sun allows readers a more personal look into the Enterprise's country doctor, as Star Trek fans learn more about Bones since the very first aired episode of The Original Series - The Man Trap. Michael Jan Friedman pens a terrific tale of heartache, heartbreak, regret and more as the character of Bones is finally given its due.

Fans of Bones or fans just wanting one final official mission of the original crew should pick up this exciting and suspenseful tale.

Dr. McCoy is a great character, but there have been other "Star Trek" books with a better handle on telling a McCoy-centric story. If the reader enjoys "Bones" stories, the better choice would probably be "Provenance of Shadows".

Star trek for the lazy.

It was very difficult to read because there is no separation of lines between the chapters! I'm sure Kindle will fix it at a later date.

I wasn't gonna write reviews today. I was just gonna read... Till I read this one. I would like to say this is my favorite Star Trek novel by my favorite author. McCoy was a trainee in a portion of this, they called him "trainee" ... so what? Some people have such strange reasons for hating novels. I agree with a previous review, the Shadows on the Sun ideal was described so perfectly. Ok, now what I thought: I love the flashback stuff, LOVED IT. The history of these characters we love so much is THE entire reason we love them. Where they came from IS who they are. This book does great in fleshing out the "trainees" (hehe) past. I love Friedman he's gutsy, would you want to take a character with a 30 year history and invent his past before the glaring eyes of millions? I wouldn't. Micheal Jan Friedmans novel is a must for McCoy fans and anyone who wants to know more about the "trainee" than they already knew. Buy it.

Great story, fast read and a fun and interesting look into the past of Dr. McCoy. I highly recommend it! I love how it picks up just minutes after the closing credits of the 6th movie as well, really a nice continuation of the story.
