Martin Caidin didn't stop writing in the late 60s, but some of his most influential work is from that period. This story of an astronaut stuck in orbit is one such.

Mr. Caidin has invented a new literary form: the electronic novel. Martin Caidin didn't stop writing in the late 60s, but some of his most influential work is from that period. Many later writers may not even remember their debt to this book-but it's there.

A film based on the novel led Caidin to prepare a revised version of it in 1968. The film was released in 1969, four months after the Apollo 11 mission, with the revised novel hitting book stores a few weeks earlier.

[1969 edition]
The book was great! I loved the story and all technical details. It starts out pretty slow, though. The first 2/3 of the book was basically this:

---

The Ironman One astronauts are marooned in orbit due to a malfunctioning spacecraft. Here, have a flashback to Pruett's childhood.

Next chapter:
The Ironman One astronauts are marooned in orbit due to a malfunctioning spacecraft. Here, have a flashback to Pruett's teen years.

Next chapter:
The Ironman One astronauts are marooned in orbit due to a malfunctioning spacecraft. Here, have a flashback to Pruett's 20-something years.

Etc. etc.

---

The flashbacks, of course, are there for character development. The background info. the flashbacks provide is great and highly technically detailed (i.e., the flashbacks cover his career as a pilot-turned-test-pilot-turned-astronaut.) If you're not a fan of that, the book might be too slow for you. Once you get past that, the story picks up the pace and you won't be able to put the book down.

Paper Back arrived in good condition. As of now I'm a bit
too busy to get started. Like Martin Caiden's past books.
Last Dogfight and other WWII titles.

Caiden's Marooned is a case where three astronauts on a vehicle that looks like Skylab (1974-1975) get marooned in space when the Apollo's SPS engine does not fire and brings them back to earth. The ins and outs of the US space program are a backdrop to the novel.

Marooned 1969 is the 2nd with this name. The first, written in 1964, concerned a marooned Mercury astronaut whose retro rockets failed to fire. Caiden then describes the US effort (via a Gemini spacecraft) and the Russian (via a Vostok) to rescue him. The 1969 book updates the hardware and concepts very accurately and with amazing foresight.

Caiden is one of the first writers to take current hardward and concepts and write fiction to it...very realistic with novels easy to read. I have to beleive that Tom Clancy took a page out of Caiden's books.

I highly recommend the book. If you are a fan of the US space effort, this is like eating ice cream. Fun read!

Martin Caidin was a master with the techno-thriller before techno-thrillers were a genre. I love this movie, and this update of his original novel updates the story to match the film. And it adds tons of details not shown in the motion picture.

This book come close to how the real US space program works.

It's has sufficient detail to make it close. Good story.

Cheers!

A solid SF work of space-race vintage. Made into an excellent movie.
