Fire and Water is a spin-off book for the ITV science fiction series Primeval. At a safari park in South Africa, rangers are inexplicably disappearing and strange creatures have been seen battling with wild animals.

Simon Guerrier (born June 1976) is a British science fiction author and dramatist, closely associated with the fictional universe of Doctor Who and its spinoffs. Although he has written three Doctor Who novels, for the BBC Books range, his work has mostly been for Big Finish Productions' audio drama and book ranges. Guerrier's earliest published fiction appeared in Zodiac, the first of Big Finish's Short Trips range of Doctor Who short story anthologies.

I am a fan of the T.V. series, Primeval, so when I saw this book figured to give it a read. The characters were true to the series as I read the appeared in my head like in the T.V. episodes. Some may feel that the book was too melodramatic, but for me it was pure escapism and that is what counts for me. I like story that have dinosaurs or some creature on the loose where it shouldn't be. Also ones that have the heroes of the story having to play it by ear to save the day. If you were a fan of the series then get this book and read it and enjoy. If you aren't a fan get and find out what you missed.

I ordered all three Primeval books and devoured (sorry) them in a couple of days, so I'm not sure I can distinguish one from the other, as they are all similar: anomalies appear, creatures come through, people get eaten, the Team saves the day. "Extinction Event" works around the famous Tunguska meteor site in Siberia and suggests, interestingly enough, that if the anomaly stays open, the event that killed the dinosaurs will also come through and destroy life today. It's an intriguing concept and Abnett handles it well. As for the rest, it's a high-octane adventure ride that stands on its own. People who simply like action-adventure and have never seen the show should enjoy it; fans like me may actually be a little pickier. Still, if you can't get enough Primeval (that would be me; I really wish the BBC would make more episodes), you'll want to add these books to your collection.

The original novel is well researched and you could just picture in your mind this story as if it had been filmed. A compelling story that fits in well with the second season. Mythology and reality. How many other "monsters" and "gods" of the past are creatures from the past and future coming through and staying for awhile in our time? Intriguing.

This isn't a short read but it is meaty enough story wise to keep reading to the climactic end. As much a horror novel in the fear generated in it about the things that are hunting and killing humans with impunity in the wilds of Peru. The characters seem real enough and the known characters like Cutter are true to their tv series personas. Again worth a read.

Have you ever been to Peru? Well, after reading this book, you'll think you have! And that is the only complaint I have about the book. No, seriously, I loved the build up, the characters, the feeling of the setting, the landscape, the heat. I loved all of it, but I wanted Conner to shut the heck up! I can only stand so much of a data dump. True, he is a Geek. And a paranoid Geek. And he is trying to impress the girl. But I don't need to know that much about Peru.
So one point taken away. But only one point. I hope that the rest of the books are like it - set outside the UK, with creatures I DON'T know about, from either the past or the future.
Just a warning, this book is set within the second series, so Cutter is dealing with the fact that Jenny is not the woman he loves, yet Leek is not around. Weird.
Still, a good solid book, at around 246 pages and I would suggest getting it. New or used or out of the library.

I was kind of late coming to video "Primeval" World, but recently caught it from beginning to end, and then wanted more...

So I found the books written & picked "Extinction Event" first. Thoroughly enjoyed the writing. There were moments where I had to stop reading because I was breathing so hard; felt like I was running with them. Dan Abnett's attention to detailing the "science" of the anomalies made it sound perfectly feasible and believable. His characters are full and real, not relying on the reader's previous knowledge of the characters. Stylistically I could hear them in my mind, especially Connor & Abby. Their rhythm was right there to see on the page. The new characters that weren't in the show were real and fleshed out as well. There are subtleties that even make Helen more real, complex, and understandable.

On top of all that, Dan has developed a visually vivid world that let's the dinosaurs, anomalies, the landscapes and characters leap off the page and run around my mind.

Disappointingly so, I went on to read one of the original "Primeval" books that was just adaptation of the script and found it flat, making me appreciate the quality of the writing of "Extinction Event" even more. It's been a long time since I've read a book as rich in so many aspects.

Chuynopana

I have read the first three books in the series so far, in order, and Extinction Event stands out to me as by far the best I've read up to this point. While the action takes off right away and remains steady to the end, this book is not as dark and relentlessly, oppressively dreary as its two predecessors. And ironically, I personally felt that this author made far better use of the characters and kept the main characters to the fore of the story. I could very easily visualize most of them, Connor especially, saying many of the things in the story. This book was very in keeping with all of the Primeverse, quoting from both the television program and the earlier books, and to me did quite well in keeping with the spirit of the show. The only thing I didn't like was the abrupt ending. But the subtitle is Book 1, right? So I can only hope there is a Book 2 out there somewhere soon.

Primeval: Extinction Event (Bk. 1)
I have really enjoyed all three seasons of Primeval. This is the first Primeval novel I have read. I don't want to give too much away but I really enjoyed the premise of anomalies opening in other parts of the planet and the tie-in to the Cretaceous extinction.

This is also the first novel I have read that Dan Abnett has written that wasn't set in the Warhammer 40K universe and I found the writing up to his usual high quality. If you like Primeval you should really enjoy this novel.

It was like rereading an old Edgar Rice Burroughs book. A bit predictable, you can tell who will die & who won't.
