Gibson's mixture of science fiction and soon-to-be-fact is as enthralling as ever, and his take on Tokyo reality – virtual and otherwise – is jaw-droppingly intimate. Gibson's inventiveness is a sublime amalgam of high-tech and kitsc. his novel confirms its author as a pioneering topographer of cyberspac. t would be hard to think of a writer who does more to test the value of the tangible’. David Profumo in the Daily Telegraph. The poet of cyberspace.

The best novel William Gibson has ever written about the world we’re entering daily. Neuromancer made Gibson famous; Idoru cements that fame. The Washington Post Book World 21st century Tokyo.

Techno-Dystopia: "Idoru" by William Gibson. I think it's very telling - and promising, that this guy who thinks he can predict an apocalyptic future for Earth where 80% of people are killed has had at least the first part of his dystopian fantasy fall at the first hurdle. Techno-Dystopia: "Idoru" by William Gibson.

William Gibson is a prophet and a satirist, a black comedian and an outstanding architect of cool. Readers of Neal Stephenson, Ray Bradbury and Iain M. Banks will love this book. Idoru is the second novel in the Bridge trilogy - read Virtual Light and All Tomorrow's Parties for more. A classic technothriller. lean, evocative, tense' Wired. Luxuriate in prose simultaneously as hard and laconic as Elmore Leonard's and as glacially poetic as JG. Ballard's.

Idoru for Claire Thanks Sogho Ishii, the Japanese director, introduced me to Kowloon Walled City via the photographs of Ryuji Miyamoto. It was Ishii-san’s idea that we should make a science fiction movie there. We never did, but the Walled City continued to haunt me, though I knew no more about it than I could gather from Miyamoto’s stunning images, which eventually provided most of the texture for the Bridge in my novel Virtual Light.

Author: William Gibson. Place of publication: New YorkPublication date: 1996. The author of the ground-breaking science-fiction novels Neuromancer and Virtual Light returns with a fast-paced, high-density, cyber-punk thriller.

William Gibson rive through layers of ancient varnish. There were hills in the distance with twisted trees, their branches like quick black squiggles of ink. She came vectoring in, beside Mitsuko, toward a wooden house with deep overhanging eaves, its shape familiar from anime

Although Colin Laney (from Gibson's earlier novel Idoru) lives in a cardboard box, he has the power to change the world.

A corporate mercenary wakes in a reconstructed body, a beautiful woman by his side. Then Hosaka Corporation reactivates him, for a mission more dangerous than the one he’s recovering from: to get a defecting chief of R&D-and the biochip he’s perfected-out intact. In London on a job, she is offered a secret assignment: to investigate some intriguing snippets of video that have been appearing on the Internet. Book 2 of Gibson’s Bridge Trilogy has nothing to do with The Bridge, but that’s ok. Berry Rydell reappears peripherally from Virtual Light, as does sociologist Shinya Yamazaki, somewhat more centrally.
Set in a post-earthquake Tokyo of tomorrow, it is refreshingly not post-apocalyptic or dystopian but is atmospheric as hell and expands upon Gibson’s view of a potential future internet, while at its core remaining a strong action adventure novel featuring deep character development. Entertaining and worth the read, and holds up well even 22 years after original publication.

This is an interesting look at the marriage of human and AI in the online community of the future. Colin is a man whose brain had been altered by experimental drugs as a teen. His new job is to hunt for the nodal pints that help an amorphous group of people understand the proposed marriage of pop star Rez to the artificial construct Rei Toie. Rei is described as the personification of desire. Most of the action occurs in Japan in the near future, which has always been my favorite punk sci- fi setting. Enmeshed in the story line is an engaging computer star Chia Pet. This is as close as I can come to describing the plot, and I have a very tenuous grasp of the proposed technology. But I enjoyed it nonetheless. It is a poignant view of humankind's possible future as we continue to approach that occurrence when our bodies may no longer be our primary homes. I am intrigues with this story line, and this book addresses it better than most.

William Gibson published Idoru in 1996.

In this book, he describes a web that connects people all around the world. Fans of virtual idols. Social networks. Portable computers with virtual interfaces.

Besides what this may mean for us today, this is a fascinating book. With very well developed characters and a good plot. You can read this today in 2015 and it still feels like "the future". I guess not as it did back in the 90's, but it can be really fascinating.

I wish this book were longer!
The book seems rather prescient and beat a lot of others to the punch. A man falling in love with a machine that appears to be a woman was explored first in "Copelia", and this Novel predates the anime " Chobits". E story also explores the perverse nature of celebrity. This novel predates many of our contemporary celebrities -but you can spot some similarities.

Can you take it? Do you really want to see what Tomorrow looks, smells, feels, tastes like? This book is UNREAL --- in fact, so unreal, I wonder if Gibson doesn't have a time machine!

I remember seeing Cronkite on 3M's "21st Century" as a child - saw PCs, huge flat screens, 'smart' houses, cell phones, solar panels, for every home, and more clean, efficient and with style, too! Gibson is like that about the next "Tomorrow" .... good book. Just think, it will occur in your lifetime, too so ... watch the market! LOL

This is a unique and wonderful Cyber-punk novel. William Gibson knows how to jack into popular culture, and stream the reader inside the possibilities of tomorrows world like an expert hacker. Idoru is an amazing read.

Its the best of the postcyberpunk, or more realistic near future gibson. Exciting plot, charming lead character, satisfying big oayoffs in the end. And of course lots of juicy but plausible nearfuture vision.

After giving the world of science fiction a swift kick in the pants with "Neuromancer," Gibson's novels dropped in quality like a brick into a black hole.
But then "Idoru" comes along, redeeming the venerable creator of the cyberpunk subgenre. The characterization is "just enough," the imagery is stunning, and the story is quickly accessible and not at all frustrating as prior novels had been. And it's a clever story, too, with unique ideas.
I don't want to give them away, but pick it up. If you remained loyal to Gibson, you'll see some familiar faces along the way, too. And if you've never read a cyberpunk novel before, go ahead and start with "Idoru" ... "Neuromancer" will always be waiting.
