Realistic

Haunting, thrilling, heartbreaking and, ultimately, uplifting. Damn Lucky takes you on a journey to the far reaches of human emotion and all the way back again. The reader finds themselves grappling with the protagonist's same struggles of what is right, who decides justice and how we live in a world of varying shades of gray. With each twist and turn of the story it's hard to keep in mind that these things happened, these people are real and this story is true. Larka's first novel is one of the finest books I've read this year. The characters work their way into your heart and you carry the story with you long after you close the cover.

damn Lucky is a vibrant witness of the events that touched Uganda in the 80s. The cultural and social identification that is opened by the protagonist permits a total understanding into a universe, a reality that no TV program or documentary have been able to transmit. These new insights permit a deep thought on the wars originating from tribalism and post colonising dilemmas that devastate Africa, but above the geopolitical interests that the book exposes, damn Lucky confronts us with our own proper demons: what is that which is just? And how far are we ready to go to defend our convictions? There definitely is a before and an after damn Lucky.

I had a really hard time putting down this book before the last page! The most dramatic reading combined with a love story that throws your emotions back and forth! A great debut with much exciting reading makes me looking forward to more from Valder Larka!

Damn Lucky is a damn good book; tragic and inspiring at the same time. It is a brutally honest real life adventure that offers a glimpse of into the hell that is war. It offers a look into a world most of us can only imagine. Importantly, the book also helps deromanticize guerrilla war, revolution, etc. Unfortunately these types of conflicts often venerated and simplified by popular culture into right vs. wrong. The true, horrible, confusing and grey nature of war comes through clearly as does the unique voice of Valder Larka. I would recommend this book to anyone interest in adventure, coming of age, war and/or post colonial conflicts in Africa.

Quite how a story with such depth of feeling and immense subject matter can be such an easy read is still a mystery to me. I had to read it a second time immediately after my first read just to help the words settle in my mind.
It's a book full of imagery and poetry set against one man's struggle with himself.
You may be expecting yet another African, civil war story but it comes from a very different perspective than simply a struggle for human rights and from any African story I had read before.
It's an incredibly personal tale of somebody finding his way, by following his heart wherever it takes him and committing himself fully to it's voice.
His life depended on it.
More to come from this author I'm sure as this is his first book.

I am not someone who likes books about wars as a general rule and maybe that's why this book was such a good read for me. The characters are very much alive and real and their own emotional and moral dilemmas really hit home. I would have found it difficult to even imagine some of the vivid events that are described but in reading them, I was given some definite food for thought. Not to mention a riveting love story in a land far far away.....
