North East England is one of nine official regions of England at the first level of NUTS for statistical purposes. It covers Northumberland, County Durham, Tyne and Wear, and the area of the former county of Cleveland in North Yorkshire. The region is home to three large conurbations: Teesside, Wearside, and Tyneside, the last of which is the largest of the three and the eighth most populous conurbation in the United Kingdom.

England's North East. He was previously curator at the Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle when he developed his vision for an open-air museum. Educated at Newcastle College, Atkinson won his first Michelin star as a head chef at a restaurant in the Scilly Isands and followed this up with another as head chef for a restaurant at Seaham Hall in County Durham. He was named Chef of the Year in the Catey Awards of 2009. In 2014 he opened his own restaurant House of Tides near Newcastle’s quayside which was awarded a Michelin star in 2015.
