Very readable, Stokes' Philosophy - 100 Essential Thinkers suffers mostly from the lack of interdisciplinary expertise the author brings to the project. The errors in the histories of the philosophers are frequent (Stokes often relies on the laziest explanation of events rather than any complex investigation of the realities of the individuals, in part, I imagine, because it does not advance the traditional narrative of their works), but he also does a grave disservice to the fields of Very readable, Stokes' Philosophy - 100.

Philosophy: 100 Essential Thinkers provides succinct descriptions of the essential thought of one hundred major philosophers, including some who are not seen primarily as philosophers, such as Darwin, Freud, and Einstein.

I found Philip Stokes' Philosophy: 100 Essential Thinkers to be a real gem-the writing is clear, the content substantial, and the organization precise. Serving as a brief overview of Western philosophy, Stokes' work captures meaningful snapshots of a 100 different philosophers in 382 pages-designating about three pages to each thinker

Philosophy will serve as an excellent guide for those interested in knowing about individual thinkers-such as Plato, Aristotle, Rousseau and Nietzsche, to name just a few-and the questions and observations that inspired them to write. By presenting individual thinkers, details of their lives and the concerns and circumstances that motivated them, this book makes philosophy come to life as a relevant and meaningful approach to thinking about the contemporary world.

100 Essential Thinkers is precisely that; a broad list of thinkers who have affected the Western tradition rather than simply philosophers. Stokes' list is well organized and expansive; he covers everyone from the pre-Socratics (Thales, Parmenides, Heraclitus) up to the postmodernists (Foucault, Derrida), to the analytic philosophers (Ayer, Popper, Carnap), and everyone in between (Hume, Descartes, Kant). Scientists are given their due in this list, too (Newton, Copernicus, Einstein).
