Food Tyrants tells us why our basic right to healthy food is at risk - and what we can do about it. Astute, engaging, and armed with examples from her own homesteading lifestyle, small farmer, homesteader, and self-sufficiency guru Nicole Faires gives you the tools to fight the intangible battles, as well as the practical ones. In a world of depleted natural resources, entrepreneurs and scientists are turning to nature to inspire future products that are more energy and cost efficient. Biomimicry, the science of employing nature to advance sustainable technology, is arguably one of the hottest new business concepts.

Chia seeds are rich in healthy fats and fiber, making them a perfect candidate for a keto diet. Additionally, chia seeds have a unique ability to absorb water. When soaked in a liquid for a few hours, they become very gelatinous. In just 1 tablespoon (15 grams) of chia seeds, you get 4 grams of fat, mostly omega-3s, as well as 4 grams of fiber, which is about 16% of the Daily Value (DV) ( 9 ). These seeds also contain a variety of plant compounds, including quercetin and kaempferol, that may reduce inflammation and prevent chronic conditions, such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes ( 10 ).

I gave this important book five stars because Faires tells it like it is; what has happened to our food, what currently is going on with food production, and the state of things to come. "Food Tyrants, " while not a fluffy summer read, is quite read-able and engaging. The author has done her research but still manages to make a serious issue quite compelling. Fans of Monsanto may not get a kick out of it, but everyone who cares about health and nutrition certainly will. It's a must read, especially for parents. Oh... Plan on growing your own food when you've finished the book.

Food Tyrants- A Review

Food Tyrants- Fight for Your Right to Healthy Food in a Toxic World, by Nicoles Faires, 242 pages, hardcover, Skyhorse Publishing

Human beings have several very basic needs. Clean air. Clean water. Healthy food. Love. Food Tyrants only discusses food.

Most of us trust corporate America to supply our food. In Food Tyrants author Nicole Faires makes a compelling argument that trusting Monsanto, other large food corporations, and the USDA is a really bad idea.

Monsanto is the company that brought us Agent Orange, Round-Up, and genetically modified seeds. Their goal is nothing less than complete control of the world's food supply. They are scarily close to attaining that goal.

Most of the meat in your grocery store is produced by what Faires calls factory farms. Let's just say that neither humane treatment nor hygiene are high priorities in these establishments. Read the book.

Most eggs sold in the United States are produced by hens in small cages. These eggs cause between 650,000 ands 3.8 million cases of Salmonella poisoning every year. Free-range egg-producing chickens cut salmonella down by 98 percent.

The USDA does everything it can to help large food corporations. "Their goal seems to be to protect the big farms from too much fallout when they sell contaminated food." Less than one percent of cattle in the United States are tested for mad cow disease every year.

But the USDA has the manpower to send undercover agents out to harass and arrest farmers who are producing wholesome, locally grown, non-corporate foods.

Think about all the unhealthy people you know. Obesity, allergies, cancer- all of these illnesses and more are linked to the types and quality of the foods we eat.

OK, so there may be problems with our access to healthy food. What do we do about it? Faires advocates buying locally produced foods, starting local farms and farming cooperatives, urban neighborhood farms, backyard vegetable plots, etc. Take control of your access to healthy food as best you can, by whatever means necessary! As an example Faires uses the Victory Gardens that were in such widespread use during World War 2.

Food Tyrants offers step-by-step solutions to the problem of access to healthy food that anyone can follow. The book is very well written, with excellent documentation of everything she states (it has a 29 page bibliography) and an index.

Everybody who eats needs to read Food Tyrants, the most important book I've read in at least five years. I highly recommend it.

This book was a most informative read. I learned a lot I did not know about the monopolistic corporations that now control food production globally. At the very least, our food should be labeled if it contains GMO crops. This book is worth a read for anyone that is concerned, or does not know, how our food is now being produced Not a wonder that many countries have forbidden GMO containing foods. If you think our FDA is working in our best interest, you better take a closer look.

Interesting book that covers wide range of topics related to current food related issues post-modern society has landed itself into. These complex issues are result of number of factors like industrialization, globalization etc. The author does not simplify these issues by suggesting simple “back to nature” kind of solution. Though the book lacks rigors of scientific references, it is backed by sincere first hand experiential knowledge of author herself. The side notes on her experience with living in a mobile house to survey many farms in US and Canada is interesting. Case studies on permaculture, farming possibilities in urban homes, related civic disputes and DIY kind of summary information on farming is very useful.
