As "The Independence of Nations" has been published almost thirty years ago, criticizing it feels a little . Fromkin states that the most important attribute of states is their independence; which means that they can not be subjects to laws like ordinary human beings

As "The Independence of Nations" has been published almost thirty years ago, criticizing it feels a little anachronistic; facing a very different political world and a different intellectual environment, it is probably natural that David Fromkin's book would highlight and focus different things then we would today. In fact, Fromkin's book should be praised for the still relevant insights it offers; my critique is best viewed as an attempt to separate the wheat from the chaff. Fromkin states that the most important attribute of states is their independence; which means that they can not be subjects to laws like ordinary human beings. Therefore, force and war are with us to stay.
