international perspective. and News Practitioners' Attitudes. Towards the Reporting. of War and Terrorism. VDM Verlag Dr. Müller. This study reports the findings of a visual content analysis of 1305 Iraq War-related photographs appearing in the US press, represented by The New York Times, and the British press, represented by The Guardian. Overall, the two newspapers visually portrayed the Iraq War differently. Further, the more spontaneous or direct coverage of actually ongoing events were rare at best, and were exclusively found in photographs that ran in The Guardian.

As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, the 9/11 terrorist attack and the U.S.-led war on terrorism have been given extensive coverage worldwide. How have the media visually reported these violent events? This work focuses on the visual reporting of 9/11 and the war in Afghanistan. A particular focus is set on comparing the visual coverage in English- and Arabiclanguage transnational newspapers and on investigating how news practitioners perceive and justify the selection of graphic photographs related to war and terrorism. The results should help to answer the questions: - Did the English- and Arabic-speaking audiences see different photographs of these violent events? Did news practitioners visually report the news from politically and culturally different perspectives? All results can also have direct implications: Is photojournalism considered journalism? Are news selection and use of available photographs key factors in visual framing of news events? The book is addressed to researchers in visual and political communication. It is also directed towards professionals in the photojournalism field, like photojournalists, photo editors, and managing editors.
