Karl frederick morrison. Series: Princeton Legacy Library. Conciliarist ecclesiology was endangered by papal monism, but even more, among the Franks, by a flaw in dualistic political thought. Published by: Princeton University Press. But it contained certain tensions which prevented Carolingian monism from being complete, and which ultimately gave rise to genuinely dualistic thought. The Frankish clergy had countered the doctrine of royal monism with the doctrine that the ecclesiastical and the civil powers were discrete and that each was supreme in its own jurisdiction.

The Two Kingdoms treats a major achievement of the Carolingian Renaissance, Frankish ecclesiology, and the influence of 9th-century ecclesiology upon contemporary political thought. Dr. Morrison focuses particularly on the argument that, in this world, government was divided between the earthly kingdom and the kingdom of the Church. Originally published in 1964.
