He became less enthusiastic about the job. He realised his journey was likely to have been a waste of time. There was a lot depending on this interview

He became less enthusiastic about the job. He started to look forward to having the interview. I shifted uncomfortably inside my best suit and eased a finger inside the tight white collar. It was hot in the little bus and I had taken a seat on the wrong side where the summer sun beat on the windows. It was a strange outfit for the weather, but a few miles ahead my future employer might be waiting for me and I had to make a good impression. There was a lot depending on this interview

This book is an exceptional tool for coming to terms with the priviledges you were born with. No matter how you identify racially, this book will move you. If you are ready for it. I truly credit this book for being my turning point in understanding my own identity and everything that came with it. Even though I wasn't aware. I joke when talking about this book by saying that I wish I could go back to the time where I was ignorant on many of the issues discussed in this book; it was so much easier then.

Exceptional book. I hope they reprint. Anyone looking to address their prejudices & covert attitudes will benefit from this one. It isn't easy, but it's worthwhile.

If you are a white person trying to come to terms with white privilege and how to be an anti-racist, this book is a great tool.

Seriously, one of my FAVORITE books of ALL time. Cannot recommend enough and please don't listen to the nonsense reviews about Ms. Helms being a racist - that person clearly missed THE ENTIRE point of this book. Especially in these times, this is a book worth reading if you are White or wish to better understand the strangers/friends/family members who are White and claim to abhor racism while simultaneously trying to equate race and class. A MUST read!!

If you are white and are uncomfortable with your white privilege (or perhaps are invested in denying it's existence) then this book will challenge you in ways you will certainly be uncomfortable with. If, on the other hand, you are brave enough to acknowledge what every person of color knows, this book will help you tremendously. As a Counselor Educator I believe material such as this is imperative for counselors who will work with racially and ethnically diverse clients. If you are offended by this book, it is likely that you are being defensive and are unwilling to see the realities of a large number of people. It is hard for white people to acknowledge, but the reality is that white people are advantaged in numerous ways that people of color are not. (And saying so doesn't make one racist.) You can pretend that all that ended with the Civil Rights Movement, but it is simply not true. However, if you are willing to acknowledge the presence of systemic oppression, you can begin to be a part of removing it. Read this book (and everything else Janet Helms has written, especially the extensive research she has conducted on this topic) and be a better white person.

Hey, the comments on Janet Helms' challenging and exciting book show how important and powerful her writing is.

Small wonder that small minded frightened people want to degrade her fine work.

This is a thoughtful, constructive book that is written carefully and has made a most significant difference in the counseling field. It is challenging, but it is also accurate.

As a White person, I am thankful that Janet Helms wrote this book and I will continue to use it in my classes.

AND--I will make the negative reviews available to my students so that they are aware of the power and importance of this book and how frightened it makes White folks!!

This is a great book. I was impressed with how much good information and insight is packed into this little book. The author makes a strong argument for the need for white people to recognize their privileged place in our society, and what this position means for their racial identity. The sections on stages of racial identity are particularly helpful in that they describe specific experiences and characteristics of people in each stage. The exercises offer ways to take the learning even deeper. This is a good read for people of any race. It is profound without being blaming or intimidating.
