Gordy wrote the book for the musical (adapted from his 1994 autobiography), and his recollections of the era and the artists he discovered form the shaky scaffolding for a musical that is, if nothing else, an efficient endorphin-delivery system for baby boomers. This should have been an interesting book but wasn't. Only 144 pages, it was in fact much shorter. Though a hard cover it was about pocketbook size. The book was all anecdotes written in a black dialect style making it extremely hard to read along Gordy's constantly repeating himself.

The first 85 pages were of his life in Georgia with the rest of his life after his moved Detroit. No dates are mentioned but it appears to have been before the depression. All we learn is he started a plastering business and later a grocery store. No mention of the printing business of his family or Motown. From how I read it his story ends in the 1940 with nary a mention of the next 35+ years of his life.

Great read. Would have liked a little more detail about personalities of Pop Gordy's own children, and how he raised them. I would have liked to have found out, how he managed to get fired from Motown, and just start working there.

Aradwyn
Great read. The book was received in good shape.

Rainpick
Amazing guy, Pops Gordy. Smart as they come. Great to read how he persevered and overcame a variety of hardships to raise a great and successful family.

Cordaron
It is funny and revealing to what life was like at that time.

Perilanim
I have read this book twice. I ordered it because of extended family ties to the Gordy Family

Still In Mind
This book was totally boring. It barely held my interest.
