Inspiring, Hopeful and Affirming! "Silent Lives" stands as a beacon of light for the healing of our larger humanity. "Silent Lives" is a call to action for everyone to take personal responsibility in learning to self-reflect, to improve understanding, to cultivate greater compassion and to actively engage in creating a more just, humane society. Finally, I thought, a book about this topic that is accessible and understandable for even the most seemingly fearful, rigid and/or uninformed mind-set. The author addresses the topic of sexual orientation from multiple viewpoints and includes everyone in the conversation. Everyone, of course, needs to be included in this conversation because, as the author so eloquently explains and articulates, this topic does in fact affect everyone. The author effectively makes "real," in the realm of everyday living, the impact, the costs and the price of "passing" by gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersexual and, interestingly, heterosexual individuals as well. This book is powerful in its ability to present information about sexual orientation in a matter-of-fact, disarming and humanistic manner. Relevant empirical research is presented to illuminate and normalize the reality of human behavior. I have sent copies of "Silent Lives" to all of my family and plan to send copies to all of my friends! Additionally, I recommend "Silent Lives" as a must-read for every professional in the mental health and substance abuse fields and every student in a formal, educational program of study in a helping profession.

Sara Boesser's outstanding book not only details the heavy price that gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people pay when society keeps them in the closet, but compellingly explores the great cost to heterosexual people and all of society when silence prevails and GLBT people feel they must try to pass as straight. Her reflections have given me helpful new ways to think about fiercely resistant homophobia and the pathology of exclusion that plagues so many corners of our society. Excellent resource for both group and individual study. If churches would seriously undertake the thoughtful readings and exercises presented here, they would open their communities to a great deal of healing.

Sara Boesser's "Silent Lives" is not only blessedly wonderful reading but it may serve as a compass to help readers find their individual ways home to authentic, richly lived lives. Sara gently helps readers move beyond the fears that trap most of us, one way or the other, in lives untrue to our souls - trapped in silences that stunt our potential as human beings. Specifically, Silent Lives speaks of the cost of silence in terms of sexual orientation, but in truth her analysis cogently speaks to all issues of identity and class in our society. She is a brilliant and compassionate writer. There is no preaching here, only compassion and integrity, and reading this book is a balm to the soul.[...].

In reading Slient Lives I realized that all are affected when a culture does not take seriouly the need to be informed about sexual orientation. Dishonesty exacts a toll that is too high to pay when its members have to "pass" for who they are not. The suicide rate among the GLBT community is higher among these groups than all other suicides combined. Get informed. Read this book!
