Wry colleagues have been heard to quip that it was the last substantial contribu- tion to the field that English folklorists have made. That may be somewhat of an exaggeration, but it is certainly the case that the discipline of folkloristics is singularly undeveloped in this country. For, while the Heads of Department in Iceland and Newfoundland are English, there is no university department of folklore in England.
