This book will help ministry leaders design programs that integrate the changing needs of contemporary society with the unchanging truth of God's Word. However, the unavoidable pluralism of globalization demands that at some level a spiritual consensus be forged. This is the theme of Helminiak's Spirituality for Our Global Community. From the noted author of the best-selling What the Bible Really Says About Homosexuality comes this insightful, powerful, and remarkably honest reflection on culture, sexuality, and church.

What do you do when you've outgrown your religion? When your life experience exceeds that of your clergy? When the learning that life forced on you challenges your religious beliefs? When you can no longer deny that something new is afoot and your church is out of touch.

These are the questions that Daniel Helminiak raises, and then, in a concise way, interprets for anyone (not just those in the gay and lesbian community) who feels like an outcast within their own church. Helminiak ties his theories with classic biblical stories, parables that reveal both a compassionate Christ and a hypocritical church. Through inspiring essays and reflective teachings, Helminiak demonstrates how one can transcend doubt and regain his or her own spirituality and faith.

Daniel A. Helminiak was ordained a Catholic priest in Rome, earned a PhD in theology at Boston College and Andover Newton Theological School, taught at the graduate Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, earned a PhD in psychology at the University of Texas at Austin, and is currently associate professor of psychology at the University of West Georgia. I' will be brief. One of the most important readings I've ever done...in 68 years. As a Christianand a gay man I've struggled for over 50 years to reconcile the two, Daniel's book was a great help. It took a bit of work to get through the premesis, but once I did, it was like a roller coaster ride. Sometimes scary, sometimes exhilarating, always a blast. This is not to minimize the seriousness of the subject matter, spiritual growth within (or Not) a specific religious tradition. He uses the Roman Catholic liturgical year as a loose framework upon which he looks behing the screen so to speak, and mines the transcendent truths applicable to all peoples whether CHRISTIAN OR NOT, GAY OR STRAIGHT, INTELLECTUAL, NOT SO MUCH...BUT ALWAYS SEEKING OUT THE CURIOUS, and discourade or just bored,i not so much to prostelytize as to encourage. His take on the various feasts of Christianity startle at time, ring as clarion as a bell at others, but always the approach of a friend who comes along side and says "have you ever considered..." His take on the Holy Spirit and Pentecost made me want to jump up and down in true charismatic excitement

"The Transcended Christian" is one of the most important books I've read. It gives me a new sense of what church really means, a new perspective in the way I approach old beliefs, and a hope for the church and the world tomorrow. The two distinguishing characteristics of the book are honesty and clarity. The honesty is brutal and necessary. The clarity is total and all-pervading. Several quotes from Helminiak himself illustrate this."Spirituality has less to do with church and prayer and more to do with daily living.""Whether God is Trinity or not, the world still goes on and we are left to live in it.""Whether Jesus was truly God or not, we still need to live virtuous lives, and Jesus still provides a powerful example."As a lover of rich liturgy, I appreciate that Helminiak is not telling us to stop singing the hymns we know and love. But he is telling us to be aware of the liturgy of daily living. When we are conscious that the Heavenly Bread is on the altar and also in the pews in us and among us and our neighbors, we must get on with our daily lives, using this spiritual truth to love and respect believer and non-believer alike. Helminiak shows there is a spiritual wisdom that is ever the same ultimately for all religions and for those who do not believe at all. Once we get past the histories, the legends and the mythologies, we can share this wisdom with those who believe like us, differently from us, or not at all. There are many treasures in this book. I was particularly impressed with the profound meaning of "Body of Christ" which Helminiak develops and also with his ideas surrounding the Holy Spirit. I understand that when all is said and done the Holy Mysteries are still holy and still mysteries. But I have a new sense of where I am going with them in this world, here and now. I did not rush through this book, but read it slowly and thoughtfully. It was a beautiful and luminous journey.

Not merely for those who have “outgrown” their religion, not merely for those who are “out” or are hopeful to better understand homosexuality from a thoughtful, generous scholar, not merely for people who identify themselves as “Christian”, this book invites its readers to explore the insights, perspectives, and personal sharing of a deeply religious man of intellectual integrity and uncommon dedication to understanding the human spirit that makes us “one”. It is easy to read for those of us whose lifestyle robs us of the pursuit of the rigorous questioning that comes with a thoroughly examined life of self-reflection and moral commitment. As human beings we are all called to “transcendence”, to continuing conversion, to longing for “something more.” Daniel’s writing gently gives us a window to how a faith tradition and a life of authenticity may intersect in meaningful, challenging, and satisfying ways. Enjoy!

a "bible" for mature christians, who used to see as thru a glass darkly, but now see clearly and honestly, putting away childish things in favor of an adult, reflective conception of their relationship to their maker. Just because institutional, organised religion has let us down doesn't mean we can't profit from a more direct, personal, unmediated relation to the spiritual. Helminiak has already trod that path and shares his wisdom and insights with you, his Virgil to your Dante.
