Really enjoyed reading about Andrews adventure! I went into the book with little knowledge about the Darien Gap and . The only minor complaint is the lack of pictures. I would be fascinated to read a "Back to Darien Gap" book should the author brave doing a return trip in 2015-2016.

The only minor complaint is the lack of pictures. One person found this helpful.

Building a road through the Darien Gap has been discussed for over 100 years, but the mountains . The fear is that it will aid drug traffickers and illegal immigrants, impact indigenous communities and degrade the environment.

Building a road through the Darien Gap has been discussed for over 100 years, but the mountains and swampland in the region make road-building expensive. So with swamps and no road, you need a different option.

read up on Panama's Darien gap. Written by Kerry O'Neill. You’ve probably read The Jungle Book already. Perhaps in its full unadulterated glory or, like me, in a truncated pictorial version as a child. I think my word count’s up and the book’s introduction has yet to begin! Egan’s tale of his 1989 crossing of the Darien Gap at just 18 years of age brings to life the hidden cultures and diverse ecosystems he encountered along the way.

The Maze, USA. Biggest danger: Flash floods, rock falls and disorientation. The jumble of colourful canyons are rugged, deep and very easy to get lost in. GPS is often unreliable and the area is prone to flash floods and rock falls – think canyoneer Aron Ralston depicted in the movie 127 Hours. If you’re going, take a penknife with you.

This is an excellent book! My wife is Panamanian and I travel there often to visit family. Nobody goes to the dark and mysterious Darien and I mean nobody. In fact I have yet to talk to a single relative or friend of a relative (and there are 200+) that have even gone as far as Yaviza. They all say it's way to dangerous. This is exactly why Andrew's book is such a great read. I found myself sweating and my heart pounding with every page. Seriously this would make an outstanding movie! Thank you Andrew!

Really enjoyed reading about Andrews adventure! I went into the book with little knowledge about the Darien Gap and was transported into the depths of Panama and Colombia through his writings! Really enjoyed learning about some of the indigenous tribes and people he met along the way! Highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys travel reads or is interested in Central / South America!

Fery good book for anyone wanting to know about this remote area. Author is a true 'adventurer' and writes clearly. though not a 'gifted' writer, he tells the story in an engaging manner.,

Found this while searching amazon for central america. This guy is no Hemingway but gets the point across as to what you will encounter should you decide to visit that part of the world. I just might. He seems to have taken his notes and published those. The could use a good editor. But nearly all books can, nowadays. Bit perplexed by the review from someone who hasn't even finished the book. Maybe next time read the synopsis so you know what you're getting. That's what i did and found exactly what i was looking for. Would suggest the same for anyone even slightly interested in exploring the darien gap. Great book? No. Good book? Definitely.

I loved the adventure part of this book about an unknown part of the Americas. It is the next best thing than being there.

In 1989 at the age of eighteen, and written nearly twenty years later, Andrew Egan ventured into Central America with a goal of traveling through the hostile, ominous Darien Gap which few others have achieved.

He did what he set out to do and we hear his modest story.
Living amongst indigenous tribes; individuals he meets along the trails and rivers; typical disorientations, humidity and bugs that go along with jungle travel, etc. this was a major accomplishment.

Although written a little too simple for my taste, nonetheless an agreeable read through the unforgiving rainforest of the Darien.

Pros: enjoyable read
Cons: wish I would have known this adventure took place many years ago before. Was disappointed at the end of the book to read how many years ago this actually took place (roughly 20 yrs). I plan to enter the Darien in the next few years and was hoping for something fairly recent.
