Shane Spall has in effect written three books in one. On the simplest level this is a tie in to the BBC 4 TV series, a narrative of Shane and Timothy Spall's attempt to sail from London to Wales in their sea barge The Princess Matilda. They are hilariously hapless, on their first journey they don't make it beyond the Thames Barrier and Timothy takes a thorough crash course in navigation before they set out to sea. They encounter beautiful moorings and full on prejudice and snobbery in equal meas Shane Spall has in effect written three books in one.

The Further Adventures of the Princess Matilda.

The actor Timothy Spall and his wife Shane have shared a passion for wandering England's waterways in their narrow boat. When they upgraded to a Dutch barge, the Princess Matilda, they expanded their horizons and set out to sea, the subsequent voyages being documented in a popular TV series. This book chronicles their adventures as well as reflecting on the part that boating has played in Spall's recovery from cancer.

"Voyages" was an "Oh, what the heck" cheapie Kindle purchase that I expected to read a chapter or two at a time between more "interesting" books. Surprise! I couldn't put it down. Shane Spall has concocted an enthralling mix of adventure, history and "Navigating Open Water 101" with husband Tim's winning battle with leukemia that inspired the middle-aged couple to take to the high seas in a custom-built Dutch barge, i.e. a glorified canal boat. The "hook" being that their only nautical experience at that point had been narrow-boating on England's inner waterways. What could possible go wrong? Well, a lot, egg-jelly (that's Cornish for "actually"). But thanks to their determination and an unshakeable trust in one another, a lot more went right. Not always from lessons learned along the way. Sometimes only dumb luck saved them from disaster, "dumb" being the operative word here. After one harrowing experience, Shane admits they were "total idiots" for initially not equipping the Princess Matilda with items no real 21st century sailor would leave port without (ship-to-shore radio, navigational charts, SatNav, an outboard motor for the dinghy for going ashore when the only mooring was a bouy in the middle whatever river or marina they put into for the night.

"Voyages" is also a delightful travel guide for Anglophiles like myself who can only dream of visiting England's quaint coastal villages. (Granted, I did get to Portsmouth for about 10 minutes in 2003, on the way to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight, so that part of the book brought back fond memories...) When the weather wouldn't cooperate with the scheduled itinerary or Matilda needed unexpected repairs, the Spalls rarely complained. It was "fate"...enjoy it...make lemonade, etc. Because they would only venture out to sea between April and October, it took 3 years to get to Wales, most of the journey accomplished in the 2nd and 3rd years after Tim had become more of an expert at reading charts and weather reports and both had become more comfortable on open water.

Shane's writing style puts the reader "right there", wherever "there" may be. However, if one doesn't have a British Road Atlas (which I did) as a visual aid, or one isn't familiar with coastal England and the landmarks mentioned, Google and GoogleMaps are great alternatives. Some Brit words and phrases will make no sense to (or be totally misinterpreted by) non-Brits, so Google will come in handy there, too. I should add that the BBC series "Somewhere At Sea" is a great starter (appetizer) for the Spalls' adventures, but Shane's books are definitely the Main Course. Bon appetit and bon voyage!

I am not sure how this book came into my consciousness, but it has been thoroughly enjoyable. I have admired Tim Spall's work and his wife's writing about their lifestyle in barging and his leukemia battles interspersed. Thier barging tales have been been a BBC series, but I have not seen it in the States.

It's a charming tale of intrepidness and fun. How fortunate to be able to enjoy the fruits of one's wages (Matilda and a Rolls). I am a sucker for British books and have a brief acquaintance with some of the ports they visited on their way to Wales. Great photos but I was longing for a detailed map of the coastline to follow along.

Interestingly enough, I too am battling leukemia and so much of Shane's recounting has hit home to me.

This was a sweet story of love, courage, tragedy, friendships, and patriotism. Tim and Shane Spall take their large Dutch barge, Matilda, around the coast of England. In this book they travel from London to Wales but in the TV series they travel all around Britain. They have great adventures and almost disasters. They make a lot of friends along the way, are joined in their travels by friends, and their love and courage is reaffirmed, especially in light of actor Tim's near-death cancer experience in the late 90's. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and reading about a couple who stay together despite all odds! I marked so many locations that I want to visit in the future. Sounds like fun! But not in a Dutch barge (for me).

I loved this book. The author shares the best and worst of those horrible moments in life that become memories and reflect your character. I had no idea who she was when I started reading and then found myself googling to learn more. Her story reflects a relationship with her husband that is to be treasured. I suspect they would be grand neighbors and people you could enjoy a cup of tea with! I hope she writes more!

If you like the adventure of boating and have ever been through a life changing illness with a loved one, you will enjoy this wonderful book!

Tim & Shane are wonderful!
Sheck out their video's too!

What a great story! I so enjoyed reading it! Got the DVD that they made as well, nice to see them both at sea!

A brutally honest account of a journey through the maze of life's challenges. I don't know if I'm more afraid of Shane or the ocean around the UK, but what I do know is that any dream I had of owning a boat is in tatters. I think I'll buy a motor home.
