The use of Web Services for Business-to-Business (B2B) and Business-to-Consumer (B2C) transactions has created risks that expose critical assets to increasingly greater threats. Enterprise Web Services Security provides the information developers, application architects, and security professionals need to build security policies and strategies from the ground up in a Web Services environment. Most security books focus on computer or network security in isolation, relegating the other areas to overview chapters or appendices. A single-system view of security, however, is not adequate to describe a distributed Web Services-based environment as it causes the developer to have to piece together material from several resources in order to create secure Web sites and services. This book takes a holistic approach that mirrors the perspective developers need to take regardless of whether they are planning and implementing the security mechanisms for a Web Service, a Web site, or an enterprise. It details how to secure critical components such as workstations, servers, and networks, the goals behind an enterprise's security policies, the policies an organization should have in place, and how to communicate those policies using WS-Policy Framework and WS-Security Policy. Various threats and attacks are also covered, as well as the identity management, authentication, authorization, access control, confidentiality, and integrity mechanisms needed to protect messages and transactions. Enterprise Web Services Security is the one book developers need to make all their security mechanisms work successfully to thwart attacks and protect assets.

The whole point of a web service is to make your information, application, or service available to others. Of course this convenience comes at a cost - you also open your system to various security risks. This book examines the exposure, risks, and ways to mitigate those risks while still providing the services you need. In addition to the risks associated with web services the authors also examine the goals of good security, and the infrastructure of the Internet, After laying this ground work they provide an excellent discussion of policies, encryptions, trust relationships, auditing, and everything you need to help secure your web services. Chapter 15 then provides an excellent section on bringing all the information together by setting up a virtual trust domain to secure your web services. The book even includes a prototype security policy document in Appendix A which forms an excellent framework for developing your own. Enterprise Web Services Security is a recommended read.

This book is one of the latest books on XML Web services security, delivers good introduction to the Web services standards landscape. From a developer perspective, the book falls short in explaining how the overall architecture applied to a SOA environment or how it can be implemented to address real world scenarios. The book is bit repetitive discussing XML security specifications and the authors forgot to explain how it is applied point and how many of those specifications are available as a product implementation. For example, WS-Policy, WS-SecurityPolicy and WS-Trust are just brewing up...for a developer it is a too long wait to get the supported product available. The book is good as a one-stop reading for understanding the XML representation of the Web services Security standards...beyond that not much help. If you wish to learn how to apply WS-Security and related standards using Java or .NET then this is not the book.

The title is also confuses me, why they call it as Enterprise Web services security whereas the book focuses only on XML Message Security only.

Beyond that I find it is not much helpful, the book suffers with lack of strategies and implementation details that developers need to build their security mechanisms using Microsoft or J2EE or Open source based platforms. You may find this book useful for concepts but you may need a companion Security reference guide spcific to implementing security with Microsoft .NET or J2EE web services.

Computer security would be really easy IF. If the computer were in a room by itself, if it wasn't connected to a communications line, and if no one ever brought in a floppy disk or other media. Unfortunately that's not the real world.

In the real world, we set up web servers because we want the outside world to come to them and get information, send us credit card information and more. Now, all of a sudden you have a different set of problems, how to let in all the people you want, and make it easy for them to do what they need, but keep out the bad guys who have other motives.

In this book two security specialists with a half century of experience discuss every aspect of building a secure system and then of the monitoring necessary to ensure that the system remains secure. The book is suitable for use with Windows, Apple or Unix systems.

Throw her heart
If you need high-level information about Web services security and you don't have time to Google around for WS specs...then this the best read. If you are aspiring Web services developer or an architect who is interested about knowing the security architecture and implementation of web services security then this book may not help much.
