To differentiate the patterns of malignant and benign forms, we used a Minkowski functional, distance measures, representation of the vector of points measures, triangulation measures, and Feret diameters. Finally, we applied a genetic algorithm to select the best model and a support vector machine for classification.

I love this book. I've been a software engineer for the past 10+ years and computer vision has recently been an interest of mine. Previously it was networking and communications and then data mining. This book is written superbly as a gentle start into an advanced topic but it's not simple such that someone with an advanced understanding would shy away from it. I would say that it was written for engineers and students who have been primarily involved in other facets of computer science.

It has tons of pictures too (not just a couple. dozens and dozens!). Edge detection was the primary topic that I was interested in and I've been ecstatic with what this book provides. Every algorithm is described and the results illustrated.

Do not buy the paperback version. It looks like a poorly made copy of the hardcover, many pages are blurred as well as being very sensitive, the images are also unrecognizable.

I've been using the previous edition of this book in my graduate Digital Image Processing and Analysis (DIPA) course for the past three years. The revised edition of this book appears to have a significantly higher number of figures and many of these are printed in color. In addition, the author has included a lengthy chapter that describes various applications of DIPA. This chapter is especially valuable for understanding how various image processing operators can be used to build complex DIPA systems. In summary, this book and its accompanying software provide a wonderful environment for learning/teaching DIPA concepts.

This is an excellent and unique text book as it is written for those students who are completely new in Image Processing and Analysis. It covers all the topics involved in Image Processing and all concepts are beautifully and clearly explained and developed. The examples in the book are clear and concise that help you to understand the theory perfectly and the exercises cover a broad range of Image Processing Applications. Since I used the first edition so I can ensure that this book is more interesting, colorful and well organized to the first one.

One of the greatest perks of this book is the application development tools, CVIPtools along with two new CVIP-ATAT and CVIP-FEPC. CVIP-ATAT and CVIP_FEPC are very useful and helpful when you will work with hundreds and thousands of images. This is an amazing application development tools. Not only you learn Image Processing and Analysis mathematically or theoretically but you learn practically and let CVIPtools aid you. End chapter problems with CVIPtools and solved examples enhance the skills in Image Processing. I strongly recommend that any student who wants to build a firm Image Processing basic should surely spend his thoughts on the material presented in the book.

I've read several books on Computer Vision and Image Processing and this is the one that helped me the most. Dr. Umbaugh clearly and thoroughly explains the material and reinforces the discussion with many examples. You can also see the algorithms in action with the CVIPtools software that accompanies the text. If you need to get an even deeper understanding of the algorithms, full source code is included with the package. Thanks to Dr. Umbaugh for a great resource that helped me get through my Master's degree.
