If you are new to iLife, then get this book. If you have bought the previous editions of this book, be prepared for disappointment. The thing that made this book the best iLife guide was the DVD that accompanied previous editions, and that is no longer included. On the plus side, the book is very well written, colorful, and chock full of useful information that makes it a "must have" if you are new to iLife. If you are not new to iLife you may find you know most of this, and the book doesn't have the same depth of information as the "Missing Manuals" series. 5 stars if you are new to iLife, 4 if you need a refresher, and only 3 if you already have the 05 version of this book.

I loved Jim Heid's iLife '05 book because of the integration with the included DVD. You could easily follow along in the book while Jim demonstrated each feature in the DVD and there were good cross-references. The '05 book was the best money I have EVER spent on a computer book. But iLife '06 doesn't include the DVD..... still a very good book but no longer so outstanding. I guess it just got to be too hard to produce a timely DVD with features being added to iLife and new versions coming out so fast. Too bad.

The iLife'06 manual is a rather compact and intensive read but very informative. I bought this book primarily for info on iPhoto and GarageBand.....to be fair, iPhoto was a breeze and the info very user friendly; GarageBand is a marvellous facility and after many hours of prior activity getting the hang of this recording studio the book was helpful. However, I sort of had a jump start in that I was already actively using GarageBand and had a grip on how things worked. I sincerely believe a new player in Garageband would have to have a very high IQ to fully comprehend and implement the Garageband spectrum of opportunity detailed in the rather compact info descriptions in iLife'06.

There is not a 'hands on lets do it' side to this book so for any aspiring GarageBand Musicians I would definetly buy Garageband 3, a book by Mary Plummer with lessons and media files to work through. This publication is part of the Apple Training Series and if you follow your nose you can record some rather snappy sounds and maybe sell bigtime and retire! Hey you will need to be clever and also be very patient as are most successful artists are.....you will also need to repeat things over and over ( as Hot Chip buzzed ) but we all need to start somewhere.

I have never seen a technology book that presented the information in a more accessible fashion. Everything works together to give both a "quick read" on how to get going and all the depth one needs to really understand the technology. I'm now getting ready to make the jump to back to Mac (after a decade), and Mr. Heid's incredibly well-done book has given me everything I need to go with confidence. Good-bye PC!

Once again Jim Reid has out done himself. This is a very easy guide book to follow the newest of the iLife family. With the exception of the neglected DVD this time around, it does explain everything you need to know about getting into the iLife world. It is very good for the novice. Totally recommended.

Not having purchased Jim Heid's previous editions of this book, I do not miss an instructional DVD that I never used. But this volume does everything that it portends to do. Along with Heid's constantly updated Web site as an instructive companion, The Macintosh iLife '06 is a joy to have and use while exploring the uses of iLife.

Having never seen a previous copy of iLife '05, like previous reviews, I found this version incredibly easy to follow. The information was laid out in a way that made it very easy to read, cover to cover. The content was clear and easy to understand and made it a pleasure to learn iLife '06 instead of a chore to drudge through like a stuffy manual.

Jim Heid is a gifted writer and the two page info format of the book is great, but there are several iLife "how to books" available. What made Mr Heids past two editions stand out was the "how to" DVD!

I, like many others thought our preordered iLife6 was to include a DVD ( I won't pre order next time). I understand that Mr. Heid had a personal crises that prevented a DVD this time I wish him well.

I just want to say I'd spend $20 just for the DVD. As a teaching aid a DVD is better than a book any time, and helps new users or existing users get a jump start with new material.

Since no-one (?) offers iLife DVD training, I say if Jim Heid has to choose between publishing a book or DVD, PLEASE choose a DVD, Tho both a book and DVD is still the best combo.

Perhaps Apple or someone else can help Jim Heid make iLife6 or iLife7 the best yet by including an instrutioal DVD WITH this companion book.

The only thing negative I can say about this current book is that there is no instructional DVD as before. :(
