Computer graphics is a sub-field of computer science which studies methods for digitally synthesizing and manipulating visual content. Although the term often refers to the study of three-dimensional computer graphics, it also encompasses two-dimensional graphics and image processing. Computer graphics studies the manipulation of visual and geometric information using computational techniques.

How can a book about computer graphics from 1989 be of any use to anyone in year 2011? Some can. I concur with the other short review: It is an under-appreciated and yet comprehensive guide to basic algorithms in computer graphics. Text includes many quite well usable algorithms in Pascal, which can be with ease converted into a Java version for the contemporary solution.

The text deals with 2D, 3D, splines and spline patches, light and color, even some fractals. Hidden lines and surfaces, all classic algorithms, followed by fundamental ray tracing, shading and reflections. Of course a newer edition would be much better serving contemporary hardware and environment, but should you ever need to refresh the basics, and work on products in which computer graphics is a mere tool to achieve a goal, this book might serve the need much better than Foley, van Dam. Considering its used price under $1 in so many cases, this might be a real steal deal!
