The Clock Strikes Twelve book. The Miss The Clock Strikes Twelve by Patricia Wentworth is a delightful classic mystery, featuring Miss Silver, an elderly lady who knits and solves crimes.

The Clock Strikes Twelve book. If that sounds like Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple, then you are right on the money. Patricia Wentworth wrote 32 Miss Silver mysteries, which are sadly out of print. Fortunately, Open Road Media has republished all 32 novels in e-book format. I was lucky enough to get one of these through Net Galley.

It is left to Miss Silver to disentangle the threads that bind the Paradine family in a strange web of dislike, hatred and fear. Patricia Wentworth was born in Uttarakhand, India but as a young girl moved to London to study at Blackheath High School for Girls. After writing several romances she turned her hand to crime fiction. She wrote dozens of bestselling mysteries before her death in 1961, and is recognised as one of the mistresses of classic crime fiction. Библиографические данные. A large extended family starts the New Year with the murder of the patriarch, James Paradine. Someone in the family did it, whether a member by blood, marriage or adoption. One family member, a fashionable young lady, is clever enough to bring in Miss Silver to investigate. Lydia is worried because the man she loves is looking like the prime suspect.

This mystery appeared in 1944. James Paradine's company is involved in airplane construction -- important to the war effort. Blackouts and rationing reinforce the wartime atmosphere. Some blueprints have disappeared from James's Paradine's desk. So a dash of possible espionage invades the plot.

Miss Silver proves herself to be a master psychologist in this book. The family breeds quite of a bit of disturbed and disturbing behavior. The ex-governess- turned private investigator sees it all, while serenely knitting small garments for her niece's brood. Her deductions based on logic and tiny details observed are a delight.

As usual Miss Silver succeeds in bringing lovers together and pointing the way to the murderer. I found this a completely satisfying Miss Silver mystery.

The wealthy family of the Owner of a major industrial enterprise is celebrating the holiday with members of his family. At Dinner that night, the Head of the family announces that a vital secret has been stolen by a member of the group and that he will act on it by Midnight unless the culprit comes to him in his office by Midnight. At dinner's end, he leaves the group and retires to his office to wait. Of course, there is a murder, everyone in the family is suspect, the police are investigating. In fear that the investigation will sweep up one of them as the killer, the new Head of the family approaches Miss Silver to look into it the situation to insure that the wrong person is not seized upon by the police. Faced by a tangled web of stories and wildly divergent personalities, Miss Silver, knitting away as usual, takes up residence in the Family Manor (has to be one of them), and applies her insight into the human personality, to uncover the culprit....or does she make a mistake this
time.
Well done and a natural for anyone not looking for a contemporary styled mystery.

This is one of her war era tales and it's a great one. Evil relations, money, intrigue, a murder, romance, a country house party AND romance! Just after the clock strikes twelve, to ring in a new year, somebody is murdered.

I suggest reading this one at Christmas, especially if family is getting on your last nerve! You'll appreciate them better when compared to the decedent and HIS family!!! Bad people get their comeuppance via the impressive brain of our real heroine, Miss Maude Silver and her mighty knitting needles. In the end all impediments to true love are bulldozed out of the path of the young lovers by Maudie the Magnificent and all is well in the English countryside yet again.

Although the gentle little romances that are usually part of any Silver plot are rarely believable, they tend to be charming.
Almost as if Miss Silver herself had planned them! "The Clock Strikes Twelve" deals with a complex family
situation. The murder victim, unusually, is a good person, so identifying his murderer takes on, perhaps, more
importance than if it were a horrid monster lying dead. :-) Plenty of pink herrings are sprinkled about, but
Miss Silver always sees clearly what others are blind to. Despite some dippy females and a very hesitant investigating
officer, the male characters are satisfying and the plot neatly wound up.

The Clock Strikes Twelve was an enjoyable book to read. The plot was intricately woven with many clues and red herrings. I give this book four stars. Miss Silver should really see a good doctor about her cough. I have read many of the Miss Silver books (and hope to read them all) but she seemed to have a cold in this one. :-)

FEISKO
Another fabulous cozy by Patricia Wentworth. Love, betrayal, theft, and jealousy. A country house and the family gathered for New Year's Eve... I would love to see the BBC make a movie out of this one.

No need to be missing Agatha Christie and Downton Abbey anymore! I stumbled upon this wonderful book/author and to my delight have set about reading the rest of series from #1. One happy reader!

I am a recent fan of Patricia Wentworth's and "Miss Silver's" adventures are great! I prefer the old mystery/romances because the heroes and heroines aren't constantly jumping in and out of bed, and the four-letter words are mild and kept to a minimum.
