Nightcrawlers: A Nameless Detective Novel and millions of other books are .

Fortunately, Nightcrawlers (the sequel to Spook) packs enough grim drama and emotional traumas to go around. A couple of short-fused homophobes are putting the hurt on gay men in the city's Castro district, and among their victims is Kenneth Hitchcock, the elder lover of investigator Jake Runyon's estranged 22-year-old son, Joshua.

When Nameless is hired by Cory Beckett, a beautiful young woman who claims to be a model, to find her missing brother, Kenneth, it seems to be a routine matter. Kerry was curled up on the living room couch with a book and Shameless, the world’s laziest cat. When she saw the box she said with mock excitement, For me? You shouldn’t have. One of your other women. The only other woman in my life is Emily, and it’s not for her, either. I set the box on the coffee table, went over to kiss her. She’d put on fresh makeup, brushed her auburn hair to a silky gloss. She looked good and tasted good, and I told her so. I feel good, she said. The checkup did wonders for my spirits.

The Penultimate Peril has been revealed to be the name of the twelfth book.

She’s always loved reading that kind of stuff. Bill Pronzini Series: John Quincannon. She wrote one before the accident, but it wasn’t until afterward, closed up in here, that she really got into it. Nameless Detective Series. 41 primary works, 47 total works. In a master stroke (or maybe just a happy accident), Bill Pronzini never got around to giving his private eye protagonist a name. He then turned around and made him such a well-rounded, finely-drawn character that a name was superflous. He's the detective as Everyman. Middle-aged, out of shape, content with a cold beer and one of his beloved pul. ore.

Nameless Detective is the protagonist in a long-running mystery series by Bill Pronzini set in the San Francisco area. The first novel, The Snatch, was published in 1971. As of 2013, there are 40 novels featuring "Nameless," and two short story collections. Though the character's name is never revealed in the series, some background details of the detective's life have been occasionally mentioned.

Bill Pronzini's novel, Snowbound, received the Grand Prix de la Littérature Policière as the best crime novel published in France in 1988. A Wasteland of Strangers was nominated for best crime novel of 1997 by both the Mystery Writers of America and the International Crime Writers Association; in addition to six Edgar Award nominations, Pronzini has received three Shamus Awards, two for best novel, and the Lifetime Achievement Award. He lives in northern California with his wife, the crime novelist Marcia Muller. Библиографические данные.

I really am enjoying getting into this series. Perhaps I am going about it in the wrong way, seeing as how I am starting with the last couple of books, rather than the first. But so far this has had zero impact on my ability to become engrossed with Pronzini and his gift at turning a tale. `'Spook' and `Bleeders' are the only two I have read thus far. `Bleeders' was just great because of his quiet and unexpected ending. ` Spook' is on the other hand even simpler than `Bleeders' in a lot of ways. And I like that. It's sort of a counter measure against all of the cookie cutter thrillers dealing with tired serial killer plots. `'Spook' does let the reader down a little because it feels like Pronzini is slowly winding down his series here. It's my own fault for not starting in the beginning. It does have a little less character development or conflict than I would have liked, but hey, this is the 28th book.

All I have really to say that this was a fun book to read. If you have read too many mysteries and thrillers like I have, I think that you will really enjoy getting into Pronzini. I am really looking forwards to the first couple in this series and expect to find a character kind of like Block's early Matthew Scudder.

The Nameless Detective Series has always been characterized by
sure-footed plotting, engaging characterization and a pace that,
while not breathless, is swift. These are, by and large, books that
you read and the plane and then take with you to give to a friend.
(By the way, the Nameless Detective's name is Bill, but don't let
that distract you.)

Spook is loosely plotted-the detecting hangs on a faded clipping
found in the victim's wallet. The motivation is weak too. It's
hard to believe the fellow who puts up the money to find Spook's
killer. Worse yet, the characterization is flawed. Tamara, Bill's
new associate is perfectly wooden in spite of Pronzini's attempts
to animate her. Her boyfriend, the cellist is more animated, but
not a central part of the story.

My suggestion: try some of Pronzini's earlier stuff.

"Spook" is a very special novel to me. I had thought that Pronzini's last novel, "Bleeders", might have been his last "Nameless Detective" novel. Bill Pronzini is my favorite mystery writer working today, and I rejoiced when I found out that this wonderful series is continuing. Some changes have occcured in Nameless' agency. He has made his assistant, Tamara Corbin, his partner, and they have hired former Seattle cop Jake Runyon to do much of the leg work for the agency. Most of the novel is told by Nameless in the first person as always, but several chapters in which Tamara or Jake Runyon are featured are told in the third person. Pronzini makes this style work wonderfully. Steve Taradash hires the agency to find out the identity of a homeless man who was murdered outside his business. This man is known on the street as Spook, and he "talks" to people named Dot, Luke, and Mr. Snow. Jake Runyon does most of the leg work in Mono County, and finds out some very interesting facts. The reader learns about the private lives on both Tamara and Jake Runyon. I also enjoyed reading about Emily, the adopted daughter of Nameless and his wife Kerry. Sharon McCone, Marcia Muller's character, makes an appearance. Marcia Muller is Bill Pronzini's wife. "Spook" is highly recommended!

Leaving aside the fact that Nameless is effectively my age (and thus shares many of the ups and downs of a generation), I find these stories increasingly believable and well-plotted. Another case where a near-perfect library discard fills my shelves!

“Spook” is the street name of a homeless person who had been informally “adopted” by workers at a film equipment company. When “Spook” is murdered, the workers want to at least find out who he was. They turn to “nameless.”

There is a lot going on with the detective agency as Christmas approaches. “Nameless” has moved to semi-retirement. He has taken his office manager as an official partner and together they are seeking to hire another field operative. The man they hire, Jake Runyon, becomes involved in the search for “Spook’s” identity.

This being a Nameless Detective novel, nothing is as simple as it appears to be. The investigation involves past and present murders and leads to a violent and suspenseful conclusion.

Mr. Pronzini is a master at what he does, and SPOOK does not disappoint. There is the right balance of the personal lives of the three investigators and the investigation itself. This is one of his older works and I found it interesting because of my familiarity with these characters from the later books. I know Jake Runyon from the later books, and it was intriguing to see Nameless and Tamara interviewing Runyon for the first time.

As I’ve written before, I’ve never been disappointed by a Bill Pronzini novel.
