An Elmore Leonard book where you need to get your hankie out. Leonard always shows his cynicism but in this one he shows some sensitivity.

He's the kind of guy who gets away with everything - even murder - until a vacationing Motown cop, Bryan Hurd, starts asking questions. All the good guys have a sense of humor and the dialogue is great fun - especially when the cops are tweaking the criminals who don't know they're being laughed at. Leonard is the Hemingway of crime fiction - his dialogue captures complex motivation in crisp photoshots.

Another great Leonard novel. The bonus here is that in addition to the usual great dialogue and cool repartee Split Images is a great plot.Folks talk about "O'Henry" endings. but he wrote 50 years ago. I believe it is apropo for critcs to refer to current novels with clever twists as having Elmore Leonard endings.
The action bounces back and forth between Leonard's two favorite venues, Detroit and the east coast of Florida. As a Floridian I can verify Florida has two cultures,"normal Florida" and south east florida where all the nuts and screballs congregate..
Good writers are distinguished by their great "hooks" or exceptional openings. Aspiring writers can learn all they need to know about that subject reading any Leonard introduction.
Some pretty good movies are adaptations of Leonard's books. This looks like another candidate and I am ready to nominate certain well known parties to central casting.

Geny
A good crime story, if not Leonard's very best. As usual, it's about the characters and how they interact. The dialogue is classic Leonard, which is to say good to great throughout most of the book. The protagonist here, a Detroit police detective by the name of Bryan Hurd, is very much in the mode of the strong, quiet and sardonic type that the author will put out there in many of his subsequent novels--notably in the Raylan Givens stories. The main difference between Hurd and his literary successors is that he is a romantic (or pragnmatic/romantic) throughout this story and that love interest becomes central to the plot. Another satisfying element of "Split Images" that is common to most of Leonard's crime stories is that there is never much doubt that the good guys will win in the end and the bad guys will get their just rewards.

Good and quick read.

This is one of my favorite Elmore Leonard books so far and I've loved them all. He is in top notch form both in dialog and story telling. I try not to do spoilers but the characters in this book are so interesting and we'll defined you'll root for the good guys and keep turning the pages to see what the bad guys are doing next. Mr. Leonard is truly the king of suspense.

Kage
This book is conspicuous for surviving its flaws. The central romantic relationship is ridiculous. Leonard would have done better to avoid any attempt to explain it and just leave it to us to accept or reject as it stood. The villain of the piece is pathetic, managing to be ludicrously exaggerated whilst simultaneously lacking any real sense of menace. The plot is slapped together and, in places, feels like it was made up as he went along, especially in the long and wallowing anti-climactic denouement.

And yet, I tore through it in a single sitting and was eager for more at the end. How could this possibly be?

It has to be Leonard himself. While his voice is as unobtrusive as one requires a good author's voice to be, his personality, his thoughts and his world-view bleed overwhelmingly through the text. A world of crystallised morality, good, clean machismo and strong women who like strong men. And talking. All his characters talk, beautifully and endlessly, each meandering, hyper-natural conversation pushing the story on much more effectively than the passages of exposition.

Dialogue and atmosphere are what this book is stuffed with - and with more than enough of both to glue this hotchpotch of unpromising elements into a highly enjoyable piece of crime writing.

Manona
While I have always been a big fan of Elmore Leonard, I didn't find this book to be particularly believable. I would like to specify why I feel this way, but, at the risk of spoiling to story I won't. Additionally, I thought the ending to be a bit of a let-down. Despite all this the book is still entertaining and should be read by Leonard fans.

Jothris
I've read several Leonard novels: Glitz, Killshot, The Switch, and Split Images. The first two were not all that good, but I liked the last two with Split Images being my favorite. Leonard is great with dialog, but seems to be trying to show off at times and while it may be realistic for some of his characters to drop words like "what", "that", "to", or "if", it seems unrealistic when all of his characters do so, even those from different geographic regions and social classes.

The love story in this novel was not terribly compelling, but it was still a very enjoyable read. I liked the ending this time. In Glitz, I did not care for the ending and in Killshot the ending as well as the late-middle were weak. The Switch was better, but still had some holes in it. Split Images was the best of the lot in my opinion. YMMV.

GODMAX
Interesting characters and plot. Don`t look for a surprise ending. Although one of his older books, it does not feel dated.

Don't know what I'll do when I finish reading all of Elmore Leonard's novels. I guess I'll start reading them all over again.
