Crime Without Passion book. Scotland and France have always had a close affinity, so it was only natural that Richard Grayson, a Scot by birth, should have taken a special interest when reading history at Cambridge in that most colourful period of French history, La Belle Epoque. All his Inspector Gautier novels are set in that period.
Crime Without Passion is a 1934 American drama film directed by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur, starring Claude Rains. It is the first of four pictures written, produced and directed by Hecht and MacArthur for Paramount Pictures. Sixty to seventy percent of the film was directed by cinematographer Lee Garmes. The plot centers around a clever and suave but unscrupulous and dishonest lawyer, Lee Gentry (Rains) who boasts that he "lives by lies". Book in the Inspector Gautier Series). After an aristocratic young woman is acquitted for the murder of a journalist, Inspector Gautier pursues the sinister motive for the killing among the "haute monde" of turn-of-the-century Paris.
