Frustrated by the rising body count and lack of evidence, veteran homicide detective, Mac Jackson, questions his own ethics when he risks the life of an innocent young woman to trap a cunning and sadistic serial killer. Known for his uncanny precision with a hunch, he's all too aware that, this time, the stakes are much higher if his gamble fails to pay off. Jessica Croft, withdrawn, vulnerable, and emotionally scarred, moves from Sacramento to begin a new life in San Francisco with her twin brother, Judd. Ninety miles from the sinister, shameful secrets of her past, and the madness that tore their family apart, she hopes to find tranquility, maybe even love. However, her chance for happiness is short-lived when she suddenly finds herself the target of a relentless madman with a deadly agenda. Loath to continue living a life of fear, Jessica tells no one when she takes a bold risk to draw him out; dangerously unaware of the trap he has already set for her. Now nothing may be able to save her except the accuracy of a hunch.

I say maybe I missed something because of how many readers liked it. My problem with the story was the poor construction. I understand the difficulty of writing, but there are just too many glitches and disjointed occurrences to forgive. I believe in coincidences, but this story was over the top. It's not very likely that two individuals from two different countries would be related just because they resemble each other. It's a stretch to think that most of the players would live in one city and mysteriously wind up working and living in the same place at the same time one hundred miles away. I continued to read to the end hoping for redemption, but it got more hokey at the end.

So, the serial killing is just practice for the big kill and the killer just happens to be an office-mate of the best friend of his target? He runs her down then comes to visit, but he also has a sick mother in the same hospital? The cop interviews the mother but fails to check on the victim? I think not. The cops have a "Keystone" quality and the most of the characters run the gamut of real people to cartoon characters.

I'm tempted to read another one of the author's books to see if the construction has improved. Meanwhile, I'm not going to spend too much more time wondering what I missed.

The title of this book should be "A New Zealander's life in California". I think authors write a novel then the publisher tells them it will sell better classified as a thriller so they add a few chapters to the front and back, throw in a few dead bodies in the middle thereby getting it classified as a thriller. By adding the action at the start the reader even if they sample the book gets the erroneous impression that it is a thriller. I will not read another book by this author she deserves a minus ratting.

Alex, a young New Zealand lady wishing adventure and a better job, moves to California with her new boyfriend. Life in USA is not as she had hoped and dreamed.
Here in California we meet a bereft sister and brother (Jessica and Judd) trying to survive murder and madness in their immediate family. Jessica becomes desperate enough in her concern for Judd that she calls SFPD Jackson. She knows she needs help, and from here on the two stories entwine inexorably. Very tense story structure! Jenny Hilborne is at her best.

Mac Jackson and his partner Red are trying to solve
cold cases, and they use a young woman to try to
lure the killer out.
Jessica Croft befriends a girl called Alex, who both
are keeping secrets from one another.
Jessica's brother is helping the police to catch the
murderer.
There is plenty of danger to add in the mix.
A good story that keeps the suspense up
right to the end.

Recommended for summer beach reading. Couldn’t really get into this book. I found the action to be forced, and characters to be underdeveloped. I was hoping for a little more oomph from this first-time author.

I truly enjoy J Hilborne`s mysteries. I have only read two of her books and I like the way she connects all characters in the end. When she introduced a character close to the end of "Madness and Murder" it was easy to connect the dots, however, I was still interested and could not put the book down.

Would I recommend this book? YES

My avoidance of crime novels is beginning to ease, due in large part to books like `Madness & Murder' by Jenny Hilborne, who happens to be mostly a huge smile attached to a wicked talent for crafting danger. If you love roller coasters, you are going to understand this: M&M is the longest, deepest plunge from the top - it is the perfect ride because you just drop. The whole, stressful thing is the plunge. And there is not a single gunshot in the entire book. Who writes this well without gunshots?

Jenny has us surrounded by characters, all who are terrified of something, and she won't let any of us get away. By the mid part of the book, I was really squirming for relief, but knew it wasn't on its way yet. She has an involved plot, with requisite ploys, and I dig for clues while I'm reading. By the time she names her villain, I'm down several wrong directions, and still plunging. There is only one thing waiting at the bottom.

While reading, you might drift away into watching; your mind wants to place these characters in their surroundings and you have to reread a paragraph, a page even. You can't help trying to observe this text in your mind. Jenny seems able to give you the space to back away and really look around. Part of that might be my own familiarity with her setting. I know the streets she names. I had lunch three times a week where she places some of her murders. I know San Francisco as someone who lived and worked there. She hit my landmarks.

But, she hit my fright points as well. There is a single, murderous fiend wandering in her text. She's not shy about telling you what he has done to others, and what he intends to do. You just hold on, as the text plunges further, and you know, she'd going to put him right there, looking at you, and you are about to drop within reach.

This was interesting story line. A lot of different characters and situations. It keeps you guessing some of the way through. It did get a little slow for me in spots. I know
a lot of authors like to do long lenghty desprictive paragraphs but sometimes I just
want more action and a little less description.
