It's true, darts is nobody's idea of a low-risk amusement, yet it is rarely lethal. Tell that to the famous barrister who was enjoying a pint at the Plume of Feathers pub, and is now residing at the morgue. Inspector Roderick Alleyn has a growing hunch that the peculiar ';accident' can be traced to an old legal case. Thriller & Crime.

A classic Ngaio Marsh novel in which a game of darts in an English pub has gruesome consequences. At the Plume of Feathers in south Devon one midsummer evening, eight people are gathered together in the tap-room. They are in the habit of playing darts, but on this occasion an experiment takes the place of the usual game -- a fatal experiment which calls for investigation. A distinguished painter, a celebrated actor, a woman graduate, a plump lady from County Clare, and a Devonshire farmer all play their parts in the unravelling of the problem...

The scene is an isolated country inn. Three friends — a lawyer, an actor and an artist — go there for a holiday having been there before. The lawyer, Luke Waterman, is a bit of a heckler and he irritates the star darts player of the pub. He is subsequently struck by a dart and soon after dies of cyanide poisoning. It seems impossible to prove how the poison was introduced.

Chief Inspector Alleyn of Scotland Yard is called in. He quickly launches into endless interrogations. The solution of the crime depends on personalities on the one hand — and equally heavily on logistics. Where people stood at critical moments is very important.

The red herrings are especially strong in this book. The clues are peculiar. Death at the Bar was first published in 1940. The complexity of the plot, the cleverness and wit of the gentleman detective, the quirky characters, and the fair play structure of the mystery make this book quintessential Golden Age.

Inheritances, romantic rivalry, and political fanaticism vie for the reader’s attention to supply a possible motive.

It took me a while to warm up to this book, but when I did, I liked it very much.

Marsh does it again - her ability to realistically weave lots of characters into the suspects list while keeping the whodunit reasonable is astounding. This suspenseful and satisfying murder mystery takes place in a quaint fishing village, a backdrop that well serves her ability to capture the mood of natural settings like a painter with words. At the very least, characters are realistic. At best, they are complex with intriguing personalities, and undergo change over the course of the book. I didn't get this one right, which colors my enjoyment on a first read. I also found the pace to be a bit slow at times. Quaint and beautiful setting balances out complicated and suspenseful mechanics of the murder mystery.

Ngaio Marsh can always be counted on to deliver a well-written book.

Lilegha
As a longtime fan of Ngaio Marsh I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting this story despite it's age, the author rarely disappoints.

Madi
I can't say why I was disappointed without giving away too much of the story.

Vizil
Not the best in the series, but I enjoy them all. She is a good author

Ndlaitha
Not one of her best.

A few in-text errors mar this edition. Otherwise, delightful as Nagaio Marsh so often is.
