A Charlotte and Thomas Pitt Novel. In the posh London street of Paragon Walk, an unspeakable crime is committed: A young woman is brutally raped and murdered. Part of Charlotte and Thomas Pitt. Once again, that incomparable team of sleuths Inspector Thomas Pitt and his young wife, Charlotte, set themselves against a vicious murderer. As the elegant masks of the wellborn suspects slip, it becomes appallingly clear that something ugly lurks behind the handsome façades of Paragon Walk–something that may lead to more scandal, and more murder. Also in Charlotte and Thomas Pitt. See All. Also by Anne Perry.

In the posh London street of Paragon Walk, a young woman is brutally. Anne Perry’s writing keeps the plot and action flowing at a good pace. At the end, I did find myself wondering about a couple of the characters and their involvements in certain incidents. The ending was definitely a surprise but I also would have liked more of a sense of what happens with some of the other characters.

As much as I like Anne Perry, this was not one of her better efforts. I did finish the book, and although the mystery in itself was really intriguing, I found I had a hard time keeping the women characters straight. Some reviewers complained about the lack of character development, however I thought there was little too much of the same explanations over & over until it was tiresome. I did find a lot of the book tedious, as if less words could have been used to get the same facts across.
The ending was abrupt, but I guess there was no where else to go with it.
One reviewer criticized the use of the spelling 'surprize' instead of 'surprise'; but I realized that the spelling may have been a British spelling, even though it's generally an archaic one.
I had just finished reading 3 well written books: the latest of the Flavia de Luce, Maisie Dobbs & the No. 1 Ladies Detective Series. Needless to say, I enjoyed these much more & found them much more straight forward as to how events unfolded.
This will not put me off any more Anne Perry (with the exception of her Christmas books, which are dull & not worth reading in my estimation). Her Monk series I have always enjoyed, no complaints. I will try another of this series before I give up.

Gold Crown
Book 3 in a long series of Thomas and Charlotte Pitt mysteries. I read the first three right in a row and I think it is time to take a break. Paragon Walk did not hold my attention quite as well as the first two books. However, that could be some burn-out on my part as these books certainly have a formula. Inspector Pitt tries to solve the murder and warns his wife to not get involved. She gets involved, is in danger, but also solves the murder. Not a bad formula as far as those things go.

A virginal and insipid young girl is raped and murdered in a swanky area of Victorian London. All of the men in this exclusive neighborhood are suspects, including Inspector Pitt's brother-in-law who is keeping some secrets of his own. The men and women of Paragon Walk are all guilty of something. There are a lot of affairs, drinking, wild parties, and a hint of something evil. Emily, Charlotte's younger sister, invites Charlotte to parties and affairs and makes sure she has the right clothes to wear. Together, they are trying to solve the mystery and hopefully prove Emily's husband innocent. There is a lot of verbal sparring as Charlotte tries to remain proper but still maintain the upper hand. There are a couple more dead bodies before the mystery is solved.

I had a difficult time keeping the characters straight in this book. That said, this book contained one of the most delightful characters. Emily's aunt-in-law Lady Vespasia Cumming-Gould is an elderly woman who does not suffer fools and has a sharp tongue. She is a hoot and I hope she appears in later novels. There are also the usual class differences and prejudices as in the previous books. Though I did not have any clue about the murderer, I was eager for this book to end. I am going to take a break from Ms. Perry for awhile and come back when I am refreshed.

I read this title when it was first published over thirty years ago. I have gone back and reread it from time to time as it, and its companions , are all very good reads.

The characters are almost all of the upper middle class of London Society or even beyond and in the aristocracy. None-the-less they are still prone to petty rivalries and jealousies as is everyone. This makes them, to me, just a little bit more human even if not more likeable. Some of the put downs between the characters are quite amusing which can lighten the seriousness of the subject - the murder of a young woman and the resultant search for the killer. Having family who are familiar with the class makes Inspector Pitts job less susceptible to lack of due regard when he is questioning various characters and it helps him stand his ground when faced with dismissal by them. Yet it is Charlotte Pitt who inadvertently stumbles on the vital issues leading to a successful discovery of whom, amongst the many choices, the killer is.

It is a good read and improves with time.

What an abrupt ending! It felt like a good part of the book was missing. Honestly, this seemed like Ms Perry didn't give this book her full attention. The main characters, whom I love, seemed shallow. Pitt was barely there. Crimes were solved by conversation and doing stupid things for no good reason. Very unsatisfactory.

in waiting
If you like Victorian cozies and lovable characters, this book is for you. With the third in the Pitt series, the author, Anne Perry hits her stride. The story begins with a body in the morgue. The victim is slight, delicately featured, beautifully dressed, her arms bruised, her face barely touched by life. Fanny Nash is seventeen when she is stabbed and raped in Paragon Walk, a London neighborhood of impeccable pedigree, and the neighborhood, as luck would have it, of Charlotte's sister, Emily, and her husband, Lord Ashworth.

Pitt is called in to to investigate. In so doing, he scrapes the surface of society--the inhabitants, their servants, their families--revealing their stories, their guilt, their secrets, their relationships with one another, their pompous ill regard for most everyone else. Ms Perry lays bare the hypocrisy at the heart of Victorian society, the theme at the heart of this intricately plotted, beautifully and accurately detailed novel. You won't want it to end, but end it does, just after the mystery is solved.

A recurring character in the Pitt series, Lady Vespasia Cumming-Gould, makes her first appearance in this novel. A favorite of many readers, this one included, she happens to be staying with Emily and George in their Paragon Walk townhouse. Beautifully attired, outspoken, witty, she serves, perhaps, as the author's point of view, but certainly as a delightful deus ex machina in this, as well as in subsequent novels in the series. One of her more envious characteristics is that she doesn't age. About "seventy or eighty" in Paragon Walk, she approaches seventy in Treason in Lisson Grove which takes place almost fifteen years later. Cumming-Gould, you go, girl!
