A Nice Derangement Of Epitaphs book. I came across some of Ellis Peters' non-Brother Cadfael murder mysteries at an op shop in 2013, none of which I'd read or seen before. Decided to start with A Nice Derangement of Epitaphs. It's an Inspector Felse mystery, though since he's on holiday with his family in this one his detective work is minimal. The plot is neat enough, with a few surprises, though I thought I'd figured out the villain early on, and for once was right.

'Shed here no tears. No Saint could die more blessed and comforted than I' read the epitaph composed by Jan and Morwenna Treverra before their quiet deaths centuries ago. But the pious portrait of content they conjured fragments when permission is granted for their tombs to be opened - and an all too twentieth century corpse is found within. A Detective Inspector George Felse mystery.

Dominic Felse, recently turned 18, still enjoys going on holiday with his parents. While wandering the shore near the Cornish village where they've taken lodgings, Dominic spots a boy swimming farther and farther out to sea in an area that Dom knows to be treacherous. When the boy ignores his signals to turn around and come in, Dom feels obliged to go to the rescue. So begins his friendship with 15-year-old Paddy, and with famed author and adventurer Simon Towne, who is best friend to Paddy's father as well as a descendant of Jan Treverra. Treverra, a colorful local who died in the 1700s, lies entombed in a church long abandoned to the coastline's drifting sand dunes; and beside Treverra, separately interred, lies his wife, Morwenna, who "pined away" and joined him six months after his death.

Simon Towne obtains permission from the church and from the current owner of the Treverra estate, an elderly spinster, to open Jan Treverra's tomb and find out whether or not the legend is true: did Treverra, who was a noted poet as well as a reputed smuggler, take a last literary legacy with him into his grave? Instead of a manuscript, Towne finds two bodies inside the tomb; and neither of them belongs to a centuries dead squire. One, in fact, died within the past few days and is well known locally; and the other, not immediately identifiable, has been dead for no longer than three years. Now there's a much more interesting mystery to solve than Jan Treverra's possibly missing poems.

This novel's plot is a complicated one, but it held my attention and it didn't lose me even once. Of course I figured out each of the several surprises just before the author sprang them; but I'm sure she intended me to do so, since she provided such useful clues. Deceptively light, devious, and one more Felse book in which the growing Dominic's relationships with his parents (definitely two separate relationships, George and Bunty are nothing if not individuals) made me smile with their realism. I enjoyed this one thoroughly, despite one small quibble with the plot...which I can't include here without committing spoilage.

Best known for her "Brother Cadfael" series, Ellis Peters (1913-1985) was also the author of thirteen novels featuring Inspector George Felse. Published in 1965, A NICE DERANGEMENT OF EPITAPHS is the fourth novel in that series. Like most of Peters' work, it is a lightly written, enjoyable read.

The story itself finds Inspector Felse, his wife Bunty, and their just-adult son Dominic on a seaside vacation--where they encounter Simon Towne, well known author and lecturer. Towne is present to open the tomb of Jan Treverra, a locally legendary figure who died in the late 1700s and whose crypt may include important writings. But when the Treverra vault is opened, Towne and his assistants find more bodies than they expect.

Peters often elected to work with highly contrived plots, and this is particularly true of EPITAPHS. At one point, Peters has one of her characters comment that the twists and turns of the case are so ridiculous that not even a novelist could get away with them! And it is true that most readers will see each major plot device in the offing long before it appears on the page. When the author writes more for amusement than mystery, this is not necessarily a bad thing, and Peters handles the most blatant aspects of her plot with considerable humor.

Unfortunately, however, the plot is not only contrived: it is extremely transparent. Any mystery reader worth the name will probably spot the killer by the fourth chapter because of the manner in which Peters sets up her tale. Although it is a quick, amusing, and painless read, this is really one of Peters' weaker efforts. Fans will enjoy it, but few will put it on the "must keep" shelf of their bookcase.

This entry in the George Felse series is well-worth a read. In it we see the Felse family on vacation at the seaside. The action of the book takes place over a six day period, but in that time they find evidence of smuggling, a missing body in a family crypt and two murders. (one from about 3 years ago and one most recent). The weird thing about these two murder victims is that their bodies are found in an old family crypt in a stone coffin that is actually minus the original body that was supposed to be there. It's a nice little puzzler that has two or three plot strands running through it. These separate strands do meet up together in the end though, and the mysteries are solved. Great story.

An old mystery is used to confuse the evidence in a new crime, and when it is all sorted out we are left with three human tragedies. One of the author's most endearing traits is that her victims are never cardboard cutouts; they are as real as any of the living characters, and their loss directly impacts the people around them. At the very least: a good read.
