Linda Palmer, Celeste Lawson (Narrator)

Linda Palmer, Celeste Lawson (Narrator). It seems that each book will be a different murder since they wrapped this up at the end. Little low on the action, and her falling for that person, and then they get in a tiff near the end, ugh. Overall, an okay book, what i would expect from book 1.

Linda Palmer's debut mystery is fast paced and filled with quirky characters, including a long list of suspects with viable motives. Celeste Lawson slips easily into the character of Morgan Tyler, head writer for Love of My Life

This is an enjoyable read -- funny, fast-paced, and providing the experience of inhabiting the world of television show production and upscale New York life. It's got some great one liners in it from the "detective" character, a "daytime drama" (read: soap opera) writer who deals with adversity with wisecracks.

And she's got plenty of adversity. Morgan is a young widow who has become very successful writing for a hit soap opera -- she lives in the Dakota (where John Lennon lived and died) and has a powerful position as head writer after only a few years. The producer of the show is a particularly awful man who ends up murdered, and for various reasons, Morgan is a suspect from time to time in this and subsequent deaths. This is tricky as there's a relationship developing between Morgan and one of the detectives. Morgan is also developing a friendship with the detective's young aunt. Then there's another eligible man who is interested in Morgan -- but can she entirely trust him? Morgan develops a short list of suspects (she knows the people in the deceased producer's life) and does a little investigating of her own, treating the situation like a plot in a soap opera (the key to solving the murderer is in understanding the relationships between the characters, she thinks). This quickly puts her in harm's way, but she's got several people who care about her and are trying to keep her alive.

This is a quick, fast-paced, witty read; the author has great story-telling abilities. I was not surprised at the ending (but I read a LOT of mysteries and have my own method of narrowing down the suspects based on what I know of the way mysteries are written). The book was such an enjoyable visit to another world that I didn't really care if I correctly guessed "who done it." I'm looking forward to reading more in the series.

Set in New York City, Morgan Tyler, a soap opera writer, is in more trouble than her TV characters. Her boss, Damon Radford, is murdered and she's being left a fortune in his will. No one believes she wasn't involved with him, including Damon's mother. Damon told her they were engaged. Morgan didn't even like the man. He was a creep, hitting on any woman with a bust.

Morgan is, of course, the prime suspect. She sets out to solve the mystery of why she inherited from a man she detested. Meanwhile, she's being stalked by the real murderer. In the midst of it all, she's falling for one of the investigating detectives.

Having a soap opera writer as a main character in a mystery series is ingenious. Palmer's characters are so well developed you'd like to meet them. Morgan's past history is woven into the story. Her past could inspire a prequel.

I found this book at a used book store and had it on my shelf for a few months. I recently finished it and immediately started the second one. I really enjoyed this book since I have watched soap operas off and on since I was kid when my mom would watch Another World when I came home from school. I must admit that I did figure out who the killer was but it didn't in any way distract me from the story and I liked how the story was resolved. I really hope that the author decides to continue this story after book 4 even though it has been over 2 years since that one was published. I highly suggest this fun mystery to anyone who enjoys a down to earth main character who is learning to date again after becoming a very young widow and who happens to write soap operas for a living.

Rocky Basilisk
Morgan Tyler is a young widow who started a career in writing soap operas after the death of her husband. Morgan is not afraid to say how she really feels and when her lecherous boss is found murder, Morgan is naturally at the top of the list of suspects. When she is found to be a significant beneficiary of his will, she knows she is in trouble. I like that the heroine has multiple love interests in the novel - when she decides to reenter the dating scene she does so with gusto. The plot twists are fun and surprising. A great novel.

With respect to the book on CD version, the narrator does a great job with the different voices. Very entertaining.

Morgan Tyler is the head writer for a "Daytime Drama" and finds herself in the middle of a murder. The guy that "gets his" is one that no one sheds a tear over, not even Morgan. At the reading of his will, though, he states in very clear terms that he and Morgan were engaged to be married! This throws her into a real mess and then when another murder occurs, Morgan tries to solve it and ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time. Morgan is a character that you will like immediately and the way she handles the problems that come her way makes me think she would be a great tennis player!

I just read LOVE IS MURDER, and found it a fast, funny read. For a behind-the-scenes look at the writing and production of daytime dramas, it's terrific. For plot twists, quirky characters, and humor, it can't be beat.

Although the author (a high school and college classmate of mine) died 4/20/13, her mystery novels will remain as favorites.
