Robert B. Parker was not just a brilliant mystery writer, but also a master of sentient and intelligent character development.

Robert B. I've read - and reread - all of his Spenser, Jesse Stone, and Sunny Randall novels, but had never read "All Our Yesterdays". In many ways, it's a departure from Parker's usual style which, at first, was a challenge.

All Our Yesterdays is a Robert B. Parker stand-alone novel, but it is complete in itself in a way none of his series books are. Three generations of two families intertwine in a tight knit relationship

All Our Yesterdays is a Robert B. Three generations of two families intertwine in a tight knit relationship. Cops in one, the wealthy in another: both get mixed into organized crime. Surprise, surprise, a Robert Parker that does not feature Hawk or Spencer and does not even have a private detective. I think this is one of his best yet. Spanning three generations it follows the men of the Sheridan family, greatly flawed, who seek to redeem themselves of an obsession for violence and corruption that becomes a hex. Their lives all become entwined with the Winslows, to the detriment of all.

All Our Yesterdays" opens amid the violence and tumult of 1920s Ireland with Conn Sheridan, a reckless young IRA captain. Conn's forbidden affair with Hadley Winslow, a Boston tycoon's wife, initiates a dangerous entanglement of desire and blackmail between two families that will span three generations. Robert B. Parker was the author of seventy books, including the legendary Spenser detective series, the novels featuring Police Chief Jesse Stone, and the acclaimed Virgil Cole Everett Hitch westerns, as well as the Sunny Randall novels.

Robert Parker was a man of incredible depth, with an understanding of the human condition that many of today's novelists so sadly lack. The kind of guy Steinbeck would have loved, and Hemmingway would have feared. Reading him I am often put in mind of Raymond Carver one of the greatest short story writers of all time. Like Carver, Parker misses nothing as life unfolds before him and his command of seemingly unimportant detail brings his sentences, paragraphs, chapters and books alive in a way seldom encountered today. When I heard Robert Parker had died I felt a huge empty hole instantly. Parker at Internet Book List/Internet Book List :: Home. Looking for Robert B. Parker: A Fond Farewell to the Man Who Saved . They were the Sheridan men, ruled by passion, betrayed by love, heirs to a legacy of violence and forbidden desire.  Gus, Boston's top homicide cop: he knew equally well the backroom politics of City Hall and the private passions of the very rich, a man haunted by the wanton courage and perilous obsessions he inherited from his father... Conn, the patriarch, a lawless cop who spawned a circle of vengeance and betrayal that would span half a century... and Chris, Gus's beloved son, a Harvard lawyer and criminologist, fated to risk everything to break the chain of obsession and rage...  Three generations linked by crime and punishment--cops and heroes, fathers, sons, and lovers united at last by revelations that could bring a family to its knees...

This book has everything that a cop mystery should have. There was crooked cops, money laundering and just about the hole ten yards of a large City like Boston!

The family of Conn Sheridan was a cop family until his grandson, Chris came along. Chris went to Harvard and became a Lawyer.

The Sheridan family was intertwined with the Winslow family in Dublin in the war with the British!

After the Winslow's came to America, Conn Sheridan came also! Conn became a Cop on the take!

This is where the story gets interesting and you need to read it to enjoy the mystery. It is well worth the time to read.

This is the first Robert B Parker novel that I have read that is not based upon the classic private eye model. It gives the reader a fascinating insight into the mind of an active IRA member and the story is set just after the end of the First World War. The main character - Conn Sheridan - is the grand father of a modern day detective who lives in Boston and interestingly, the story is told from the perspective of this modern day cop who appears to be pouring his heart and soul out to a beautiful young woman who is listening intently and hanging on every word. We learn more about the couple as the tale progresses and the first relevation concerning them will leave the reader breathless.

The story opens in Ireland just after WWI and a series of events transpire which lead to the first betrayal of the book. Fate takes over and 20 years later the two lovers meet again, but in vastly different circumstances.

The story is riveting. It is at once a love story, and a crime novel. It is graphic and violent and explicit, and true to form of the late, great Robert B Parker, incredibly moving. It is an essential read for anyone that claims to be a fan of the great man, and comes highly recommended for everyone else.

Four stars for this beauty.

So what is this book really about? Is it about the cost of love, and a beast called 'betrayal' hunting down the perpetrators over time like a crazed being set for revenge? Is it a tale of karma coming back for its own dose of revenge upon those who sin and continute to sin for an extended period of time? Or is it essentially a love story of two modern day souls who were together in their physical selves but not together or committed to each other until the very end?

Maybe that is what the book is about. How to learn commitment and to learn what love really is.

Robert B. Parker was not just a brilliant mystery writer, but also a master of sentient and intelligent character development. I've read - and reread - all of his Spenser, Jesse Stone, and Sunny Randall novels, but had never read "All Our Yesterdays". It blew me away. In many ways, it's a departure from Parker's usual style which, at first, was a challenge. By the time I finished, I was as deeply involved as I'd ever been with any other Parker characters. This book is superb: While impossible to choose, I think it may be his chef d'oeuvre. I am forcing myself to wait at least a month before I read it again. And then I know that in future, I'll read it yet again. PARKER'S CHARACTERS ARE LIKE OLD FRIENDS THAT ONE VISITS OCCASIONALLY JUST TO KEEP IN TOUCH.

Although I have never quite gotten into the Spencer books, losing Robert B. Parker and Jesse Stone were personal blows to me. I have read a lot of Parker's stand alone novels - as well as the Sunny Randal series - and liked this one very much. Sometimes a bit difficult to keep up with which generation of Sheridan men is being featured at times, but if you have to go back and read some parts again you will just enjoy them the more for it!

First off, I'm a big Robert Parker fan - Spenser, Sunny Randall, and Jesse Stone - but this was an excellent departure from Parker's usual genre. I thoroughly enjoyed the travails and triumphs of the Sheridan men of three generations. The plot eventually becomes so interwoven among the characters that I had to stop and reconnoiter.

The Sheridans lack the humour of Spenser, but their characters are very closely drawn and consistent throughout the novel. A very good read, overall.

Not in the R.B. Parker mode but excellent. I am not quite done reading it but am anxiously looking forward
to finding a spare minute to get back to it. VERY well written and gets into your head like not many other
Parker novels. A bit "dark" but intense and not the "smart ass" style of Spencer novels. I really
loved Parker novels and miss the heck out of the writer. He won't be replaced! . He was one of a kind. None of the co-authors I've read do
justice to Parker's unique style .

A startling novel about family connections. A must read for the thinker and the somber deep reader. Advise you to read this no matter what genre you enjoy. Love the Irish Boston and Ireland history.

I have read all the Spensers and all the westerns and a few others by Parker. This book maybe has the most developed characters and is the most serious of all. Very good. Not as light a read as the others, but well worth the time.
