The third consecutive No.1 bestselling crime novel from the author of the DI Logan McRae series and Birthdays for the Dead. The first body is chained to a stake: strangled, and stabbed, with a burning tyre around its neck. But is this a gangland execution or something much darker? Someone's leaving little knots of bones outside Detective Inspector Logan McRae's house, but he's got more pressing things to worry about. Rival drug gangs are fighting over product and territory; two teenage lovers are missing; someone's crippling Asian immigrants; and Logan's been lumbered with an ambitious new Detective Sergeant, a mountain of paperwork, and the unwelcome attention of his superiors and the local crime boss. When another body turns up, it looks as if the similarities between these murders and the plot of a bestselling novel are more than just a coincidence. And perhaps those little knots of bones are more important than they look...

the monster
A lot going on in this book. We start out with a man being "necklaced." Identifying him becomes a problem. We have a young woman fascinated with a fantasy thriller currently being made into a movie. A couple of "stars" of the movie seemingly into getting free advertising. And more. Logan is now an acting DI, while Steel is a DCI. And yes, she is still trying to get Logan to do all her paperwork. The fantasy-addicted young woman looks very good for the crime, but did she really do it? Meanwhile, there is all this other action going on. A wonderful story - again! With Steel's little quirks and Logan's long suffering attitude, we are in for another very good read!!

I've liked all the previous Logan McRae books, but always found something to quibble about. Too much gore in this one. An easy-out ending in that one. But this time Macbride gets it all right.

Some of the other reviews say that the Steel character has gotten a bit repetitive -- imagine that: a character who stays in character! -- and while that's probably true it didn't bother me while reading, not least because Steel isn't really central to this plot.

The writing is as tight as always. The plot is complicated, but gets pulled together in a totally believable way. The slow reveal of one character is handled masterfully. The addition of a new sidekick lets Steel move into the background a bit. And the relationship with comatose Samantha is both touching and quite sad.

Highly recommended.

This was one of the best detective stories I have read for a long time. I wanted a break from the many LAPD, NYPD etc. police thrillers from the USA and Stuart Macbride certainly delivered that break. Acting DI Logan McRae and PS Roberta Steel of the Aberdeen police in Scotland are about as far away from most US police investigators as an iceberg from a tropical island.

This is not a book for the faint hearted and parts are very graphic. The storyline is tough and complex, starting with a murder where someone is "necklaced" with a burning tyre, apparently stabbed and then left to slowly die. MacRae is upset that someone is leaving bundles of what look like chicken bones (are they?) tied up in a nice parcels on his doorstep. A couple of 18 year olds seem to have run off together. But nothing is as it seems.

While this is a serious book it is also frequently a very amusing book making me laugh out loud on several occasions. The main characters fight each other and resort to humour and profanity as a defence from the stresses of their real world. The brilliantly funny chain smoking lesbian PS Steel is definitely the winner in the humour and profanity stakes - so much so I was hesitant to include any of her best responses in this review.

Stuart Macbride is one of the UK's best authors of detective novels and this book is one of his best. The publication schedule on Amazon.com is a bit strange. It was released in Australia in mid December, 2012 and in the UK in mid January 2013. It will not be released in the US until 14 May 2013.

This eighth and most recent addition to the Logan McRae series opens up two years after the events of Shatter the Bones (Logan McRae, Book 7). And in the very first pages, the reader is presented with a gruesome murder-by-fire and some misleading updates regarding some originally uplifting news. This is certainly MacBride's most blatantly manipulative novel - which though is surprising, feels more like a betrayal than a genuine plot twist.

But plenty of recurring characters appear here - the usual police cast, but also Isobel and Colin, and some others, too (don't want to spoil the actually pleasant surprise!). The plot is more streamlined and simple compared to some of the other novels in the series, but there are still some fun twists thrown in. Again, MacBride neatly ties up his loose ends. I am disappointed that there isn't a release date on a ninth book - this is a greatly entertaining series with some really vivid and likable (and unique!)characters, twisting plots, hilarious dialogue and some grotesque crimes. I hope the wait isn't too long for the next book!

Another hit. Good,detailed, real characters.
Thoroughly enjoyable! I so look forward to more Steel, Logan, Rennie and Stephanie books.
Keep writing, please, Mr. MacBride.

Book 8 takes place 2 years after 7 ends.. I think? But frustrating at times trying to work out what's real and what's not, but I'm still hanging in there! Got 22 Dead Little Bodies because I need to know what's going on. That's the mark of a brilliant series!!

I have read all nine of MacBride's Logan McRae novels, and they are all superb. His characters are interesting and they develop and grow through time. Their interactions are fun and insightful. The plots are complex and have surprises. Not a simple "who done it", it allows the reader to feel a part of the action. His descriptions of places, weather, sounds, etc. are amazing; so realistic.

Stuart MacBride mysteries are a hoot. The goriest of tales, told in such a humorous way, that you will not believe that you're actually laughing at all that horror. Be advised that these stories are written in "Scottish English," which in itself will make you laugh. The whole series of MacBrides Mysteries will provide a joyful read, but only if you have a slightly dark sense of humor.
