Only 18 left in stock (more on the way). Robert B. Parker was the author of seventy books, including the legendary Spenser detective series, the novels featuring Chief Jesse Stone, and the acclaimed Virgil Cole/Everett Hitch westerns, as well as the Sunny Randall novels. Winner of the Mystery Writers of America Grand Master Award and long considered the undisputed dean of American crime fiction, he died in January 2010.

Michael Brandman, who took over the Jesse Stone franchise after Robert Parker’s death, has replicated the Jesse Stone character pretty accurately, but the story lacks a certain edginess and noir feel of a genuine Parker book. All three subplots are resolved fairly predictably. Moreover, none of the subplots has any connection to either of the others, giving the book the feel of an anthology rather than an integrated novel. I am a Jesse Stone fan and need that Jesse Stone fix and this book took care of it.

After Robert B. Parker’s death his family chose Michael Brandman to continue it, and since Brandman had been the writer/producer of a series of pretty good TV movies based on these books that made a lot of sense. Yet in these first two books he did Jesse really comes across as a cop who abuses his power over trivial matters while ignoring major situations. There was more than one situation for Jesse in this book. Jesse witnesses a collision caused by a spoiled brat with no conscience whatsoever.

The 2010 death of author Robert B. Parker left many fans bereft; no more Spenser, Jesse Stone, Cole & Hitch, (maybe some Sunny Randall mourners) books. Then Parker's estate contracted other authors to continue his work. Ace Atkins has done a superb job with Spenser and his novels are as close to the original as we're likely to get. I was never a huge fan of the Jesse Stone stories in print but enjoyed the TV versions featuring Tom Selleck. That said, I had hopes that these might be OK given that Brandman was a writer for the television movies so thought they'd be worth a shot. Brandman captures the pacing, short chapter style and somewhat terse dialog of Parker's but the characters seemed off and Jesse more like Spenser. Brandman also makes a number of technical errors; others have mentioned the airbag deflation mistake early in the book. It's also apparent the author has little familiarity with firearms, he repeatedly refers to semi-automatic pistols as "automatics". At one point he has Jesse confronted with a "45 millimeter Ruger"- wow, that's some handgun. The bore of a 45mm would be bigger than a shot glass, he obviously meant .45 caliber. The plot(s) were just so-so and while it was nice to visit with some familiar characters I'm not sure any future efforts will be worth the time.

Recalling the principle of keeping one's mouth shut, if one hasn't anything nice to say, I've removed my earlier, scathing review, so as not to be as much of a "cranky-pants." After all, Brandman obviously put some effort into writing this book. But, it falls short of the series in calibre and character. I can't recommend it. I do like Brandman's screenplay writing, but not this novel.

This is my first Jesse Stone novel and I am impressed. This is number 11 out of a 14 book series and I did not feel that I missed anything by not having seen a previous book. Stone is a sheriff in the town of Paradise and he is willing to stand his ground against anyone, as he is not a subject of intimidation. A rich resident has invested thousands of the dollars in the elections of many local politicians, including the district attorney and judges, yet Stone stands up to them in the arrest of a seventeen year old daughter that continues to break the texting while driving laws. A movie company moves into town and and their top star is murdered. Here he must fight the FBI's investigation aimed at the wrong perp. And a third story line has the town's water department over charging citizens, and then where has the money gone? I will look forward to finding more Jesse Stone novels in the future.

Mr. Brandsman does a good job writing in the style of Robert B. Parker. I liked the Jesse Stone character and had hopes for this book. I may even try another. I was disappointed in the lack of homework. The author talks about a Beretta .38 pistol. I am unaware thatBeratta makes one. A .38 special is a revolver. Several pages later the author gives a character a .45 mm pistol. I am unaware anyone makes this. There is a .45 caliber which is a bullet almost a half inch in diameter. A .45 mm would be needle. In other words good style, story okay, but more homework needs to be done on the weapons written aboutor used in further novels, at least make sure they exist.

I came on the scene of the Jesse Stone novels just recently. I downloaded novels 1-5 thinking I would probably read one or two before getting bored. To my surprise, Parker kept my interest although he did lag a little on the third novel. I made it my quest to read through the entire Jesse Stone series. I bought the three latest novels although they had a different author. Killing the Blues was not up to par with Parker's dialogue and characterization, but I finished the novel and decided to start reading Fool Me Twice thinking that the new writer with practice, would pull this one off a little better. Not only has he turned the taciturn Jesse into a chatterbox, but he is now a preachy, judgmental chatterbox at that. The final nail in the Jesse Stone novel series coffin then came a couple of chapters in when Jesse informs the new to town LA producer that he, Jesse Stone, was "Angeleno born and bred." Jesse Stone novel fans know that he was born in Arizona. Come on Brandman, you can't write sequels to a novel series without reading the original novels first! Maybe you don't have the great way with dialogue and characterization, but you could at least keep the facts straight from novel to novel. Robert Parker's death could not kill Jesse Stone, because like all novel heroes, he lives eternally on the pages of the novel, but Michael Brandman's poorly crafted knock-offs have.

The book reads as though heartily thrown together to take advantage of the series momentum. Fortunately, I didn't pay full price.

The story line is three disconnected plots - celebrity murder, embezzlement by a government official, and the inevitable disturbed teen girl taken under his wing by Jesse Stone. There is no mystery, the dialogue is thin, and Parker gets to moralize about a couple of environmental issues.

Oh yes, there is also the inevitable girlfriend. They spend a lot of time in bed, and in the end she leaves while Jesse Ponders the meaning of life.

Thinking back, I may have rated this book too highly.

Jesse Stone is facing another murder in his small town of Paradise. Before he reaches the solution, the reader is carried through, as usual and as entertaining, his drinking, his women, small town politics as well as characters related to organized crime. The cast of characters are always vivid, believable, and, usually, adding a bit of humor to the story. Unforgettable are two of his deputies, Suitcase and Molly. I am totally hooked on reading the entire series, having begun at Book 1 through this Book 12.
