Dr Gideon Fell - 1 ). John Dickson Carr. At the time of HAG'S NOOK, Dr. Fell has been working for six years on his magnum opus, The Drinking Customs of England From The Earliest Days.

Dr Gideon Fell - 1 ). Dr. Gideon Fell, a history professor, agrees to help Scotland Yard investigate the baffling murder of Martin Starberth, who seems to be the victim of a family curse. It was eventually published in 1946, Carr said, by a publishing house with the evocative name of Crippen & Wainwright. Fell is also the author of Romances of the Seventeenth Century and a book on the supernatural in English fiction.

Dr. gideon fell, detective. He comes striding towards us now, beaming like Old King Cole. In these words, the narrator of one of John Dickson Carr's radio-plays introduced Dr. Gideon Fell. As Anthony Boucher remarked, "the detective story in the grand manner demands a Great Detective," and Dr. Fell is a memorable sleuth. He is larger-than-life both in his appearance and in his actions. Although he is not fiction's most gargantuan crime-solver-that prize belongs to the four hundred pounds of Paul McGuire's Superintendent Fillinger - he puts most detectives literally in the shade.

Tad Rampole is a young American traveling in England who, in a chance encounter on a railway platform, meets and falls in love with Dorothy Starberth. Rampole has a letter of introduction to Dr. Gideon Fell and both soon become involved in the affairs of the Starberth family.

John Dickson Carr is a very clever author in the tradition of Agatha Christie and Ellery Queen, but with generous dollops of gothic suspense. The story centers around the abandoned Chatterham Prison, governed for generations by the Starberth family. a room overlooking the Hag's Nook, near which many Starberths have met their deaths.

Hags nook international polygonics, ltd. new york city. Under the pseudonym "Carter Dickson" he wrote a series of books about Sir Henry Merrivale, and under his own name he wrote about Gideon Fell, who eventually appeared in twenty-three novels, four short stories, and four radio-plays. The Starberths die of broken necks’ goes the legend in the village of Chatterham.

Book in the Dr. Gideon Fell Series). by John Dickson Carr.

"Martin Starberth stands to inherit his family's estate provided he can fulfill a certain condition. Part of the estate is an old prison where the Starberths had been wardens for generations. From a balcony off the Governor's Room, Starberth wardens watched countless men be hanged from the Hag's Nook gallows, their lifeless bodies dropping to a deep well below. A cholera epidemic wiped out the prison population decades earlier but a curse seems to have settled upon the Starberth family with several heirs meeting their death via a broken neck. To inherit the estate, each prospective heir must spend the night of his 25th birthday locked in that warden's room, hopefully escaping the curse. But when Martin's body is found battered, his neck broken, beneath the balcony, it seems that the curse has once again claimed a victim. Dr. Gideon Fell, a splendid figure in his slouch cap and cape, supported by two canes, suspects murder instead, even though he and several others had the room under observation at the time of the death."--P.
