Murdoch was at his desk and got to his feet. What can I do for you, sir?. Bring me up to date on this bloody maid affair pening. Murdoch pulled at his moustache. If Colonel Grasett was wondering and if Brackenreid was venturing out of his own office, somebody was turning up the wicks. Probably the alderman, Godfrey Shepcote. He struck Murdoch as the kind of man who liked to find a good cause to make a noise about

I purchased three of the series with the idea I would get a rich tapestry of character development beyond that offered by the tv show.

Well, so much for that idea. I don't find anyone in the books, except maybe Crabtree, to be a sympathetic character, at all. And Detective Murdoch is a man of his times and not really what one would call a "smart detective."

In the end, I was looking for, and expecting, a sharp detective in a turn of the century setting. Well, I got the setting but not the sharp.

I did find the story interesting, and was unable to guess exactly what was going on from start to finish, which is the hallmark of a good mystery, but I was a touch disappointed that it was so different from the television series. I find the chemistry between characters to be so charming in the television series that the original felt limited by comparison. I didn't dislike the book, but I didn't love it either.

Started watching the show became addicted. While reading an article found out there are book (which are much better than TV and/or movies) so I had to read a few. At first a little off because I think of the TV version of Murdoch the book described a different Murdoch, so I was disappointed but now I like reading the book just ignore the description of the characters.

I bought this book after becoming a fan of the Canadian TV show. If you're expecting the show in book form, you will be disappointed. The story is very dark with little humor to lighten the mood. The main characters are not as you may expect, or maybe missing entirely. (No Dr. Ogden, Inspector Brackenreid a jaundiced angry alcoholic.). I would not have paid $9.99 for an unknown author to read the story as written independently from the TV show. I'm disappointed and do not plan to purchase any more of this series.

????????????????????????
The first in the "Murdoch Mysteries "series, I got hooked on this from the BBC show. The books are different but nonetheless great. More in line with agatha Christie or Dorothy sayers, but not as posh I found it very hard to put down. Even though it's different, check out the show, it too is great!

IF YOU ARE A FAN OF THE MURDOCK MYSTERY SERIES FROM CANADA YOU WILL BE A LITTLE SURPRISED BY THE BOOKS. IN THE BOOKS MURDOCK DRINKS AND IS A WOMANIZER UNLIKE THE TV SERIES. ALSO DR OGDEN IS AN OLDER WOMAN AND HAS LITTLE TO DO IN THE MYSTERIES AND CONSTABLE CRABTREE IS AN OLDER FAT MAN WITH SEVERAL KIDS IN THE BOOKS WHILE HE IS A YOUNG UNMARRIED MAN IN THE SERIES. THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHER GLARING DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE SERIES AND THE SIX BOOKS.
OVERALL THE MURDOCK MYSTERY SERIES, EVEN THOUGH SLIGHTLY! UNBELIEVABLE ARE VERY INTERESTING TO WATCH AND WILL PROVIDE MANY ENTERTAINING HOURS AS MURDOCK INVENTS NEW CRIME TOOLS AND MEETS FAMOUS PEOPLE LIKE ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL, ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE AND ANNIE OAKLEY.
HAVING SAID THIS, YOU WILL FIND THE BOOKS A LITTLE BLAND AS THESE DO NOT HAPPEN IN THE BOOKS. BUT I WOULD STILL HIGHLY RECOMMEND THESE MYSTERIES AS GOOD STAND ALONE READING. JUST REALIZE THEY DO NOT FOLLOW THE BELOVED SERIES AT ALL.

Murdoch mysteries have NEVER disappointed me. Interesting, great plots and explanations of how the mystery is solved. However the spelling of words and much of the slang was new to me. I admit using the dictionary quite often. Also, these mysteries take place in the 1800s and find much of the writing educational.

I love the way Maureen Jennings takes me back in time. I can imagine the research involved in capturing the late 1800s in words. I enjoyed the movie version of this story, but the book is even better.

I believe that the cover is misleading. The characters are not those depicted in the tv series. I believe that knowing this from the beginning, you will not be disappointed.
