“It takes a lot of chutzpah for a book reviewer to write books of her own….But Hallie Ephron…can hold her head high: She does it, and very well, too.”—Seattle Times

A recluse who works and lives online must brave the “real world” when her sister goes missing in Come and Find Me—a gripping and ingenious novel of mystery and psychological suspense from Hallie Ephron, author of Never Tell a Lie. Writing about her sensational debut, USA Today noted, “You can imagine Hitchcock curling up with this one.” Aficionados of Rear Window, Vertigo, and North by Northwest—as well as the many fans of Harlan Coben and Mary Higgins Clark—will get a similar charge from Come and Find Me.

Diana Highsmith is a computer hacker who has traded in her black hat for a white one as she has a business protecting companies from other hackers. She formed the business with her boyfriend Daniel and his friend Jake who are also hackers. But since Daniel's death in a climbing accident, Diana's life has gone out of control. She has always suffered from anxiety but currently she is also paranoid and agoraphobic finding herself unable to leave her house. Her only outside contacts are her sister Ashley and Jake.

Luckily, most of her business meetings are conducted in an online world where she feels comfortable. When some of her recent business contracts end abruptly, she decides to investigate and comes upon some surprising information. Then her sister Ashley disappears and Diana is forced to go outside her home and do things she hasn't done since Daniel's death to try to locate her.

This story has a lot of twists and turns as Diana braves the real world. She learns some surprising and heart-breaking things. I really liked the way Diana worked to overcome her psychological issues even though I thought the resolution of them seemed to quick and easy. I liked that Diana was smart, honorable, and loyal to her friends.

Fans of psychological suspense will enjoy this story.

What if your passion is for the world online, and the virtual reality you have created means more than the real world?

Such is the case for Diana Highsmith, who worked in the virtual world, hacking, alongside her husband Daniel and his friend Jake…until a climbing accident took Daniel.

Now Diana is continuing to work with Jake as her only partner, to create software to combat hackers and make up for what she, Daniel, and Jake once did.

But her panic attacks, from PTSD, have literally imprisoned her in her home. Her security features alert her to potential intruders, or anyone at all who approaches her home. Isolated and crippled emotionally, Diana is not in a good place when her sister Ashley goes missing.

Finding Ashley will require Diana to take her first brave steps outside her home, into her car, and searching, with the help of another gaming friend.

But what Diana discovers as she moves beyond her home is something so surprising that she might have to change everything she believed about the life she once had.

This novel was very well written. It had a wonderfully interesting start and a fascinating heroine. I really enjoyed Diana's backstory and her relationship with her sister. Then, about 2/3 of the way through, it got weird. SPOILER SPOILER ALERT Suddenly, the location moves to a huge complex with a silo and all sorts of security and passages--just incredibly unbelievable. It was like a really complicated dream where hallways go on and on. I think if this had been a normal setting, I might have accepted. SPOILER The very intelligent heroine who has trouble with panic attacks suddenly becomes stupid and brave. Why she followed a baddie to this fortress, I don't know. Why she didn't at least attempt to escape during the drive--and she was driving--I can't understand. She became a completely different person and--although the writer attempted to move her slowly to this, it didn't succeed. And SPOILER, third--How could she have ever loved a man who is, at the core, evil? How could she not have noticed that? Such acceptance makes me question the character.

NO MORE SPOILERS As I wrote the points above, I wonder why I gave this book 3 stars with all those flaws and realize I did because it's well written and the charaters and plot are interesting until it becomes so unfocused. I mourn the loss of the heroine and the story I liked so very much at the beginning.

Hallie Ephron's second novel, Come and Find Me, is a gently geeky melange, one part techno-thriller, two parts mystery, and three parts character study. Not a pop page-turner, this is a story that sustains the reader's interest through a soft suspense and a close focus on character. The protagonist, Diana Highsmith, is an emotionally scarred agoraphobe who has barricaded herself in her high-security house and retreated into a life online, running her software security company through an avatar on a Second Life look-alike. The disappearance of her gregarious kid sister forces her to emerge from her high-tech cocoon and begin a journey of discovery and healing. In the process, the novel touches on issues about the connections between external reality and virtual worlds, between noble ends and destructive means. But the real strength of the novel is in the ways it digs deeply into the personal world of its central character, making us care about Diana and cheer her on toward a fuller life.

This book grabbed me from the first page. Those who live" in virtual worlds always have fascinated me, and I wonder what their motivations are. In this, we meet a woman traumatized by the death of her husband, who was involved in high lever hacking activities, as was she. What happens after his death when she turns into an agoraphobic trying to work without ever leaving her home is a tangle of kidnapping, espionage, and corporate destruction. I could hardly put the book down. This came at an inopportune time, as we were supposed to go to neighbors' home for Thanksgiving dinner. We weren't late, but eyebrows were raised at the "skin of your teeth" time of our arrival. Loved the book and look for the MOVIE!

Global Progression
Good summer read. Not a lot of depth, so goes fast. It has the white hats and it has the black hats. It kept me interested enough to get to the end.

Really well written, the dialogue and vocabulary paint a wonderful book. Most of all, it is very exciting...
