This book never seemed to get off the ground for me. I dunno, maybe it's because the idea of Wall Street and financial machinations are boring to me, but the plot seemed to lack the typical Ken Follett dramatic tension necessary to maintain my interest. I was never gung-ho to begin the next chapter. Of course, this was penned under a pseudonym, yet, according to Ken Follett's "Forward" to the book, he thinks it is one of his best plots ever. As a reader, I disagree with his conclusion. I feel that this book had too many insufficiently-developed characters, and each's "story" was of little import to the book's overall plot line; a few could have been left out without affecting the book's pace…which was really slow. Definitely an early book.

I found this book a very easy and enjoyable read. There is no main character but the story holds your interest or at least it did mine. There are characters in this story that could be construed as bad guys but that would be like stating a wolf is a bad guy and a deer is good guy. Follett is a master of taking attributes that reside in men like greed, ego and lust and matching then against what some would consider weak or less than aggresive counterparts. This is not to say the less than aggressive are stupid, they are not, it is just their life is not dedicated to preying on others. I liked this book because it was a good story, it held my attention and it entertained me. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 star rating is because most of Follett's other books are better. It's not fanasty, it's not historical, it's not about a hero in shining armor, it's about today and wicked scheming people. I recommend this book as a good E&E (escape and evasion) read.

This book has some interesting chapters in it. However, it just bounces around too much. Just when you think you are following one set of circumstances, another set appears in another chapter. Which would be OK if there was some cohesion to it. It's a fast read, but not one of Follett's best.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. In the intrduction Follett says it's a favorite of his, his most clever plot, but that writers appreciate clever more than readers. 5 stars for the clever plot, for believeable, bumbling characters who's schemes are flawed, for not tying all loose ends. This is not a story wherein the good guys brillantly outsmart the villians, where the brillant young reporter wins a Pulitzer.

This review is for the New American Library (Division of Penguin) paperback edition, October 1987, 261 pages. PAPER MONEY did not make the USA Today's Top 150 Best-Selling books list, which has tracked book sales since October 1993. Ken Follett has ten novels on this best-seller list.

Tim Fitzpeterson is a politician. Felix Laski is a corporate raider preying on the weak. Arthur Cole is deputy news editor at the Evening Post. Tony Cox runs a gang of thieves. Derek Hamilton owns the controlling interest in a conglomerate that is in trouble. One day in London, these five men unwittingly fall into the same pot of soup. They stew from six in the morning until near five in the evening. There is no recipe, no chef either, and without someone to stir the brew, some of the ingredients will burn. No one knows until Ken Follett finishes cooking.

In the introduction, Ken Follett wrote, "The plot of PAPER MONEY is the cleverest I have ever devised..." and that the novel "...is the best of my unsuccessful books." The plot is intricate. The structure of the novel without a protagonist and divided into the hour-by-hour evolving collision is clever. Overall, it's a good read.

Intertwined mechanisms are in place for a large dishonest purchase of an oil company. So much discete and loss of humanity is throughout the story. Not one of my favorites from an author that I love.

Togar
I was expecting the same quality of writing that I found in Follett's later books. To be fair, this was only 3 CD's so the characters and story line were not described and developed as in his longer novels. The explicit sex was too much for my taste. It was my first time to read any of Follett's earlier novels. I could not follow the story and the characters. I will soon be reading Follett's CD Collection and hope to find it meeting the expectations that I have for Follett's writing.

Such great details - couldnt have painted a clearer picture with a brush. Dont know how I missed this one - perhaps it wasn't carried in stores before I started finding books on Kindle. A big note of thanks to Ken for providing much needed entertainment while waiting out a typhoon on the coast of Japan. Just wish I could've made it last a few more days - too hard to put down.
